atleast everyday I see someone advising the use of castor oil to bring on labor..along with other methods like pineapple...sex..walking..etc..however as we should all know by now..castor oil can kill the baby...or at the least put them in distress...PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE put a sticky thread on the awful effects of castor oil and how it SHOULD NOT be used or be advised to be used to induce labor!!!:nope: would hate for one of us to distress or even lose our LO after listening to this "advice"

I also agree..pls make a sticky thread!! Would hate for anything to happen to anyone's LO!

Agreed - NO CASTOR OIL! Please make this a sticky thread!

Would someone explain why it's so dangerous? My friend drank it to induce labour, worked a treat. I don't really know anything about the stuff.

well its a laxative and not only can it cause you to have diarrhea it can also cause LO to have diarrhea which can cause LO to die from dehydration or cause them to poop while still inside you which they can then breathe in and can cause serious lung/breathing issues...not saying it happens everytime but why risk it

Would make an excellent sticky thread!!!

Agreed please sticky this!! I'm overdue but would never dream of using castor oil =/

Never heard of it so just googled.

Even on the sites recommending it, it says the side effects are cramps, diahrrea and vomitting and that hospital induction is safer.

Which begs the question why anybody would keep their baby cosy and safe for 40 weeks then risk it all in the last few hundred yards.

Definitely agree - would make a worthy sticky as i see a lot of women asking about it.

Wow no kidding because I had no idea it was so bad before I read this!
Thanks for posting!

agreed, I am starting to get irritated at the amount of times I have to stress the dangers of castor oil.

Back in the 50's women used to mix castor oil and gin together to either cause a miscarriage or if a women is miscarrying they drink it mixed with gin to help the miscarriage along. It was called the Mother's Mayhem, my Nan made sure I was aware of this at the beginning of my first pregnancy.

I have to say I agree! I had a girl on Facebook recently parading around her use of castor oil to try induce her labour at 36 weeks!

Good thing I came across this! I had no idea it had possible adverse effects! My mom drank it to deliver me :) and I was thinking its okay - didn't link the laxative effects with it till I read all this just now. Thanks for posting! :flow:

This was one of the facts/tips on one of my Facebook apps about my pregnancy

"Never take castor oil to try to start labor (it may increase the risk of meconium-stained fluid, which can be dangerous for your baby)."

FINALLY!! first pregnancy thing that has not been suggesting it as an ok way to start things...wish others would follow suit!! next think you know they will be telling us that smoking is healthy and encouraged during pregnancy..like they did back in the 40s and 50s!
