in the UK, will doctor or a midwife be able to get an early scan?

Im feelings anxious, iv only known I'm pregnant a week but already it feels forever.

I go between feeling so happy I could burst and feeling stressed and anxious about another miscarriage. I know an early scan often wont tell what can happen in the future, but feel that it would ease my worry about the immediate future somewhat...

Obviously I'd prefer not to go before 7 weeks to avoid even more unnecessary worry.

So, has anyone managed to pursuade a GP to book an early scan? - I haven't booked with a midwife yet x x

It really does depend on your gp, their policies, and how busy your local epu are. Our Epu won't see anyone for an early reassurence scan unless you have had three consecutive losses after 6 weeks or a previous molar or eptopic. Emergency scans are availible but that's only if there has been pain and bleeding or suspected eptopic. Our gp won't even offer blood tests to check hcg for reassurence. But I've heard of ladies on here having an easier time getting scans. It really just depends on where you are I guess and your local hospitals individual policies. There's always private scans? Most places will scan from 8 weeks, maybe an option to consider if your gp won't help?

Our policy is the same as maryannes they refer you to EPU after 3 consecutive loses but you still have to beg for it and remind them of their policies

Iv found an early scan online, from 7 weeks priced at £60 which seems reasonable to me, I don't really want to waste valuable NHS services just on my anxiety, so I'm happy to pay, however thinking about it will it really help? Will it reassure me, or if it does will it be brief? Anything can happen can't it....I'm really torn. The twins stopped growing at 7+4 so I suppose after then for a scan would be a good time?

Both my gp and midwives have got me am early scans in the past.
I did also book a private early one after the nhs one which is when we found out we had lost 1 twin so im glad I did it I was them prepared for it at the 12 week scan.
Hope you manage to get one x

Yes Lucy, good idea to get a private scan some time after the 7+4 stage. It may only reassure you for a short time, but that reassurance (however long it lasts) and the chance to see your little nugget is well worth the £60 I reckon.

I've got a scan at 7+1 with EPU but I only get it because I had a previous ectopic.

For my second pg I tried gp and epu and couldn't get one-due to 'only' 1 loss-so went private. For my third I called the consultant secretary from my second pg and got one that way. For my 4th I was under the recurrent miscarriage consultant so got lots. I hope you get one and good luck.x

I paid £39 for a private scan at 8 weeks and it was well worth the money for the reassurance. My doctor didn't offer one despite previous losses so I just paid for a private one for peace of mind.

No chance where I am either, so I'm planning to have a couple of private ones. Thankfully there's a place close by that does them reasonably cheaply.

I got a scan after two loss's, the last one was a blighted ovum and the midwife at the time gave me her phone number and told me to text her if i ever got pregnant again, So i did and she got me booked in for a scan a week later.

I have had 3 loss's in total but my GP told me when i went that i would not be getting an early scan but the midwives in the EPC said different!

I went for a scan and baby measured small for EDD so i went back 2 weeks later for another scan then my 12 week scan is on 1st july

Good luck for your 12 week scan :flower:

Iv decided to book privately for 8 weeks. The GP surgery wouldn't even book me with a mw before 10 weeks, despite me having lots of questions. So I doubt highly they would get me an early scan!!
