Hi,

I just wanted to share my birth story. I was induced at 37+3 due to my health. Baby measured bang on target but my health required an early eviction!

I was taken in on the Thursday morning 23/8/12. I've had 2 previous full term deliveries and cervix check showed I was already 1/2 cm (they gave me a sweep 2 days prior which didn't really alter much), so they went straight to the proctin pessary to start ripening cervix and hopefully start contractions. This was the most frustrating bit as it was quite a long process. I was getting a few mild contractions but no real progress and had a 2nd pessary in the evening. They had to monitor baby regularly because of the pessary. Contractions started to get a bit stronger during the night and I went to 3 cm but they weren't regular and by morning they'd tailed off completely, but by the morning I was definitely ready to have my waters broken.

Once a space was available downstairs on labour ward (again, a bit of a frustrating wait), they took me down and broke my waters at 5.30pm. Breaking the waters was probably the most painful bit to be honest. I went from 3cm to 7cm instantly and it was a sudden rush to sort pain relief out - I had a shot of pethidine, and contractions started properly. It was really chilled out - I had my reiki music in the background and practiced my yoga breathing. I had gas and air as they got a bit worse, and went on the birthing ball which also sped things along. By 7.30pm I was 8/9 cm dilated and managing contractions well with breathing and gas and air. By 8.10pm I was getting the pushing feeling. At 8.18pm the urge was strong and I couldn't hold back. The midwife only had time to put one glove on and he shot out in one push! So once they broke my waters it took 2 and 3 quarter hours and he was born.

I had a couple of minor grazes down below but nothing requiring stitches. Placenta came out nice and easy, no major bleeding. I had a beautiful baby boy weighing 6lb 9oz. He went straight to my chest and fed within about 30 mins. He's perfect and doing really well.

Just thought I'd share a very relaxing induction story. I'd been very nervous about it as I'd gone naturally the previous two times so I was really pleased to have had such an easy time of it. The only frustration was the waiting to get the cervix ready, and waiting for space on a ward, but once things got going it was quick and really manageable. I recommend pethidine and gas and air. It hurt, but it was controllable.:flower:

it is always great to hear positive stories of birth :) congrats!
