Hopefully this is the right place to ask this

I'm hoping the mummy's who have experienced both will be able to answer :flower:

Is it true that induction contractions are worse?

Yes. I have not been induced but i am a CBE and a doula and i have seen lots of inductions. If you get put on pitocin (which is likely with an induction) the contractions are stronger, longer, and more frequent compared to natural contractions. It is well documented that induced contractions are much harder to cope with than natural contractions. Sorry not trying to scare you, just being honest :flower: you never know though, some women still do fine hun

yes with natural contractions you get a build up of hormones and endorphins which allow you to cope better with the contractions with induced ones then they come harder from the start so your body isnt prepared for them so you feel them more, thankfully my induction was with a pessary and i didnt need pitocin so didnt have that driving my contractions constantly the gel worked long enough to get my body into its own rythym of contracting then wore off and let my body get on with it

^ yeah i was just gonna say, sometimes with the cervical ripener you dont need the pit and those arn't as bad...well as long as they dont use cytotec/mysoprostol as the ripening agent

Not necessarily, it depends on HOW you are induced.
I was given Cervidil, a vaginal insert used to ripen the cervix. Usually it is left in for 12 hours before being taken out. Afterwards, you are usually given Pitocin, a medication that is used to start or improve uterine contractions. With my experience, I was given the Cervidil around 8pm, and immediately began contracting on my own (I was told that I was most likely getting ready to go into labor naturally, as I progressed so quickly). At 3am I was checked, was 3cm dilated, and pronounced officially in labor. I had my baby 3 and a half hours later... So I never required the pitocin.

My contractions definitely weren't that bad. I had a natural child birth, and would happily give birth again. Just because you are being induced doesn't mean you can't have a great experience. I LOVE my labor and delivery story. It was the greatest day of my life. :cloud9: Don't worry! You may not require medicine to improve your contractions-- your body may handle fine on it's own. Good luck! :flow:

I think I may be an oddity, but I had the opposite experience. I was not induced with my first. My labor started a couple hours after my water broke on my own at 39 weeks. The pain was horrible. It was 16 years ago, but I remember it being very sharp pains all in my abdomen. I had a hard time coping and had an epidural and he was born vaginally after almost 3 hours of pushing.

I was induced with my second at 39+5. They broke my water and started the pitocin in the morning. The contractions started immediately, but felt like menstrual cramps. I kept waiting for them to get painful like with my first labor, but never did. I didn't scream, wasn't writhing in pain, and had no problem breathing through them. In about 4 hours, I told the nurse I felt pressure down below, which I had never felt with my son because of the epidural, and she said "no way, you can't be fully dilated because you're not in enough pain!" Well she checked me and I was not only fully dilated, but crowning. My daughter was born in 2 pushes. It was an amazing experience. Like I said, maybe my experience was odd, but my second induced birth hurt a whole lot less.

im afraid im in agreement with the others:growlmad: for me it want a pleasant experience. my contractions also went from nothing to full on horredous pain which i didnt have a hope in hells chance of coping with. Id definately say induction is a very last resort!

You might not need the drip!

I had the cervadil pessary in the morning and went for a long walk in the evening, that was enough to set me off into labour the next morning and avoid having my waters broken/pitocin drip. The lady opposite me also did the same, so it's not that uncommon!

My birth was also very fast!

Hello :hugs:

I have had 3 natural births and was induced on my 4th. I have to say for me it definitely was more painful. I have never made a sound giving birth before but with Isla i was swearing and allsorts  My husband said he was waiting for my head to spin round lol.

I'm sure it's not the same for everyone though :hugs::hugs:

I wasnt induced but did have synto for slow progress and even an epi wasnt enough to stop them hurting, i needed gas and air too.

I've since had a labour with no synto and can honestly say my ctx didnt hurt.

Hmm, you know, I'm not sure. I can't really say for much but the contractions from the pitocin were totally bearable. When I had the cervical capsule inserted that started to really hurt but I did manage to go 27 hours without any sort of pain relief! Something that I am proud of because I have horrible pain management. Unfortunately I never got to get past 3½ cm before I was rushed into the OR. :sad1:

I have had inductions with both my girls are they were horrible. I had the drip of pitocin, and you go from nothing to full pain. I will not be taking this option 3rd time around.

Yes. Mine were on top of each other lasting 1 minute from 1cm dilated. I wanted a natural water birth with just G&A and was screaming for an epi and spinal at 1.5cm

I didn't have natural contractions sorry but when I was induced the MW warned me it would be more painful and pushed the EPI upon me. The way I looked at it was I don't know what it feels like to labour naturally so didn't know whether it was normal to feel as much pain as I did or not.

I had a lovely experience with my 3rd. I was induced at 11 days over, just given the gel in the morning had twinges all day then they all stopped so on the 12 day they give me gel again in morn and one in afternoon, same as first day I had twinges but nothing painful then in evening my two children were up visiting me and at about 8.20 I felt two pops in my stomach which was my waters breaking my sil quickly took my children out and my contractions started coming strong and quick my 9lb 7oz baby boy was born 1 hour 30 mins later. it was great i hope my next baby comes out as easily, I did not have the drip which I hear is awful. so my induction was a lot easier than the other 2. I did walk up and down the corridor a lot on the 2nd day which the midwife said helped me a lot.

My first induction with the cevical ripener wasnt too bad, but I still opted for an epidural not long after I was started on pit.

My second induction, I was started on pit and it was aweful, I wanted to push at 5cm, thats how strong the contractions were. My cervix began to swell as I tried to fight the pushing censation and I was given an epidural as a last resort. I got to 9 cm and they stopped the pit. My labour came to a huge full stop and didnt start again until after having pit again for another 2 hours. Epidural was wearing off and my god did I feel it!

I had pitocin after the cervadil insert failed to work, and contractions weren't much different from what I expected going in. I ended up getting a dose of stadol (i think?) in my IV, and that helped a lot. I wish I hadn't, in retrospect, but the nurse really pushed that on me because she felt I was progressing too quickly and LO's heart rate was dropping.
Hoping this time I won't need an induction so I'll be able to compare!

I was induced with my second son, they broke my waters and I had a drip. I'm not sure if maybe it was because he was my second but it was so much easier. First time round labour lasted about 9 hours, I used TENS, gas and air, pethadine and then I was begging for an epidural (but it was too late). This time, being induced, labour only lasted 1 hour, I managed the first half doing my breathing exercises and the second half on gas and air. Not sure how I would have coped if it was any longer but when the consultant came in she told the midwife that the drip was on too high so maybe that's why it was over so quickly!x

for me, I had the drip with my daughter and they turned it right up so I was having a continuous contraction really. It bloomin hurt but she was back to back which would have contributed. I had an epidural in the end and it was all fine. With my son I was induced with pessaries and had my waters broken and I can honestly say I enjoyed labouring for him :flower: I only had one puff on the gas and air and decided I'd rather have him naturally x good luck x
