Hi ladies.
When i found out i was pregnant, I decided i wanted to breastfeed my baby.
So when she arrived, that's what i did.
Only, i wasn't getting on with it. The midwife came to visit and did an observation whilst I was feeding to see why. It turns out I have inverted nipples!!!!
I was devistated, but I was given lots of tricks and tools by the midwife.
One of the things she said to try was Nipple Shields, they worked!! So I carried on breastfeeding with the shields. Everything was going perfect, but then it started hurting me so much, i was bleeding and it would take a good 10-15 min to 'pluck' up the courage to latch her on as it hurt so much, the midwife came again a week or so later and Amelia had lost weight!! I couldn't believe it! She then observed me again and Amelia was only getting the nipple now. She said to try with the shield to draw the nipple out at first, then take it off. So i tried, but Amelia wouldn't latch on to my bare nipple.
I carried on with the shields and just bit my tongue through the pain, until i couldn't bare it no more. I got mustitus and my milk was going sour and drying up!! I was so stressed and didn't enjoy Amelia, I started blaming her for wanting feeding! I thought to myself 'this is stupid'!!
So after over 4 weeks of trying, I FINALLY admited defeat and formula fed.
I have 'just' about made my peace with this, although sometimes I wish i could still do it. I have found a thing called a 'Nippleette' which is supposed to be a permanent correction for inverted nipples, so i have got one for 'next' time.
Apparently it's a problem that could have been solved during pregnancy if i'd have known before. So now I do know, hopefully it can be sorted and I can breastfeed my future children.
I beat myself up for along time over this, but I guess it's just one of those things. At least I tried (which is more than most) and Amelia had over 4 weeks of my milk. Can't be that bad eh? And I'm prepared for this next time.
I hope that anyone else having problems can see a light at the end of the tunnel. Keep your chin up. You will get through it.
At the end of the day you TRIED!
Start enjoying your baby. I'm certainly going to!.
