Is he ready?

LO is only 5 months but sits up with some support (just his sides not his back or front), reaches and grabs things into his mouth instantly and chews (but not sure if this is teething). He's been grabbing for things I'm eating for a couple of weeks. Yesterday he grabbed my apple and licked it, several times in a row. Does this mean he's ready? I thought it was 6 months and I don't want to wean him earlier than he needs but at the same time I don't want to delay him if he's ready. I'm confused.

Even if he seems 'ready' (grabbing food isn't a good sign of readiness though as all babies should be grabbing things by about 4-5 months), there are good reasons to wait until 6 months. One being it gives him more time to hone his hand-eye coordination, meaning it will be even easier for him to feed himself, and he'll be even safer because he'll be able to sit up better by then, even if he's doing it some now. The better they can hold themselves up, the less likely they might be to slide backwards, which can make them more likely to choke. Plus, at 6 months, you can feed finger foods (like that apple) plus wheat, oats, dairy, meat, etc., more than just pureed veg and fruit, and those are much more exciting and calorie-dense foods anyway, when also paired with fruit and veg. He will also be more likely to have lost his tongue thrust reflex by then (meaning less refusing food or gagging because it's so sensitive), which will make mealtime more enjoyable for both of you.

Plus, weaning is a lot of work. It's so much easier when all you have to worry about are milk feeds and not preparing or storing or transporting solid meals, even if you do BLW like we did (meaning he just eats what you eat). You still have to make adjustments in preparations to make food safe for a baby to eat and some days you may find yourself cooking two completely different meals, if the one you're making for yourself isn't 'baby-friendly'. Weaning is fun and great, but it is work. If you can put off having to worry about food for another month, I'd do it. It will be here before you know it and you'll be glad you waited.

I agree I'd rather wait. I guess what I should have said is that we will be baby led and we will be starting with finger foods initially, not 'set meals', as that is what is recommended. I'm really asking if it's ok to start offering him a bit of carrot/sweet potato/banana etc to see how he gets on.

In my baby led weaning book it states grabbing food from you and putting it in their mouth to munch is the biggest sign they are ready (along with sitting up almost unaided and making gnawing/chewing movements) and that's what he did. He has really good hand to mouth co-ordination already - there's no beating around the bush with this one!

Also, it's actually not going to make much difference to what we eat. I have always made all meals from scratch (including all sauces - I can't stand it when people say they have something homemade but it's actually from jars - like lasagne for example) and I don't add any salt to my food. For the last month or so I have been cooking meals from my BLW cook book in preparation for weaning so my husband and I are already eating food for the baby! We won't be eating anything different to him. Although I am not looking forward to making sure I also have food in his nappy bag as well as bottles

Yes its fine to he offering him food from now, he won't eat it until he is ready. Just remember that you put the food on his tray and when he can pick it up, take it to his mouth, chew and swallow he is ready. I blw'd my eldest and he's a pro and has been since early on. We started our youngest with offering bits and he has already got the hang of it and is swallowing food already. We started two weeks ago.
Good luck and enjoy. Its lots of fun! X
