I was purchasing my recent go-to sandwich last week (grilled ham and cheese) with pepperchini's (sp) and when I asked the woman who was taking my payment if they had any Cholua (hot sauce) she very sternly looked at me and questioned if I was really going to eat that "in my condition." WTH?? I asked what she meant, and she said that her doctor told her YEARS ago, when she was pregnant, that spicy food and hot sauce especially, is really bad for baby and can cause blindness.. has anyone heard this and is there ANY truth to it? Or is she just crazy??

That's bull. I have hot sauce on everything. If it doesn't give you heartburn, no worries!

Sounds like an old wives tale to me!
I know people have hot curries when they are trying to induce labour... and as catherine said, it'd probably give you heartburn, but i really don't think it'd harm the baby!

AHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

My best friend would have ended up blinder than a bat had that been true! So would have my daughter.

Now, where is that sriracha sauce?

It's makes u wonder how Indian woman feed themselves when they are pregnant. Enjoy it. Silly woman another non medic expert who happens to work in a sandwich shop haha.

I actually get heartburn when I drink milk, but none from hot sauce :-). Everytime I'm pregnant I like things spicer and spicier. Even while
Breastfeeding. Maybe that's why my 4 year old like Texas Pete hot sauce on his eggs? :-)

My best friend can eat whole habanero peppers, most likely because her mom couldn't get enough of the spice while she was pregnant.

The hotter the better, for me!

Definitely not going to do any harm =)

Dumbest thing I've ever heard. I ate food as spicy as I could get it with my DS. He's fine! I eat spicy food when I want this go round too!

Don't listen to that woman. Either she's a liar or her doctor is/was a nut.

I even ate spicy food while breastfeeding....which I got all kinds of crap for.

Thank God because I actually crave the stuff!

Other then aching your butt the next day if your not used to it and maybe giving you heartburn theres nothing wrong with it.
If there was how would people from countries (sorry if this is seen as a sterotype) such as India, mexico and korea cope with pregnancy.

The only issue is heartburn. Otherwise enjoy! I love spicy food when baby lets me! ;)

I eat curries and spicy food I dont see the prob but remember in first preg I was scared of it all. Really is to much scaremongering about.

If you're making chillis, then maybe something in the preparation *shrug*.

The only way that you'll go blind from chilli is when you put your finger in your eye after touching it.

That sounds like a load of baloney.

The only concern might be giving you heartburn but if it doesn't - or you're willing to deal with it - have all the hot sauce you want.

I once got some sauce from a can of chilies in adobo sauce in my eye. I thought I was going blind! It was a once-in-a-lifetime shot in the eye and it burned for hours.

Perfectly fine as long as it's not giving you heartburn. I eat spicy all the time :) and did with my DD too!
