Is it a phase? (And will it end)

I've been a single mum since the day DD was born up until 8 months or so ago. But even now it's pretty much just DD and I so we share an incredibly close bond and we rely on each other.

The last few weeks have been tough. She's gone from a toddler who is happy to be independent and who is willing to explore and try things to someone who won't do anything without me, needs me to see/do/try everything with her, who won't let me out of her sight even for a second. She won't explore new surroundings or experiences and looks to me crying if someone else tries to encourage her to try things (having a dance with other kids or playing on a slide for instance) its breaking my heart as I can see her missing out on things because she either won't leave my side or is too timid and scared to have a go. She's not even 2 yet.

It's also taking its toll on me. I'm 33 weeks pregnant and I'm having contractions when I do too much, I can't even lay in the couch as she is so clingy and wants me down on the floor with her constantly (and I'm just too big and sore to do that for too long!)

It's beautiful that she needs me so much and I feel blessed that she does rely on me but I would like her to regain some of her independence. What can I do to help her, please tell me this is just a phase?

My little boy has been soooo clingy with me lately. I'm nearly 29 weeks pregnant. I think they sense they're about to be joined by a sibling and freak out a bit. I'm sure it will pass (I hope!).

Both of our kids got that way nearing the end of a pregnancy.. I think the above poster is correct in that they can sense change coming and become rather clingy. I hope it passes for you sooner but it took a bit after each new baby was born for the other sibling/siblings to adjust.

It is a phase, my DAD is about the same age, I think she is just coming out of it.

Aww my daughter used to be just like this. She was sooo clingy, very sensitive and afraid of everything. She did grow out of it though and her confidence has developed so much over the last year.
