Does formula HAVE to be mixed in hot water? I've read a few comments about bugs in the powder...?! DD is starting to take room temp bottle which will be great in the middle of the night-but does that mean she could get sick if I just add the powder to cool water?

I think it's a sterilization issue? but with that said I do that with our bottle sometimes....like when out I put boiled water in a container and make her bottles with that and it's definitely cool by the time I make them and she is ok:)

i never used to but when we went camping recently i had no where to keep my bottles cool so i had to fill my bottles with boiled water and then added the powder when needed.
back at home i make all the feeds up in advance and store in the fridge and microwave when i want it.
i know lots of people that just add the powder when needed best thing to do is just do what works for you x

No body can say "it'll be ok" for definate as its not the recommended way to make up bottles, but then neither is storing pre made bottles int the fridge. We do what works for us but i would personally never add milk powder to cooled water x

you have to put it in boiling water as powdered milk isnt sterile.

The heat in the water kills off any impurities that there is. I'm with Vici on this one, I wouldnt make them with cool water.

Maybe you could buy some ready made cartons for the night time feed?? That way its sterile & easy to make up the bottle xx

Thanks ladies, as far as I know Nutramigen Hypoallergenic formula does not have readymade formula unfortunately. New to this, so just trying to figure out easiest way to do it, especially in the middle of the night! Not got a bottle warmer...are they worth buying?

You can pre make nutramigen and store in fridge (as long as you've cooled it quickly) for 24 hrs it then doesn't take long to heat it at night I just stick it in boiling water then by the time I've changed LO's nappy it's ready

SMA Staydown requires to be added to chilled previously boiled water. So I dont believe the issue with 'bugs' etc anymore

They say on the pack that the only way to kill the bacteria in the milk is by adding it to boiling water, but TBH my LO has 1 or 2 dummies throughout the day, and we don't sterilise them, so she's picking up germs from them anyway. I add formula to boiled water at room temperature

I do this and done it with my son too and never had any problems at all
xx

It's extremely unlikely the formula will leave the factory with bugs in it. I think the advice is probably because once formula is opened, the company has no control over how people use it - things can fall in it, hands can not be washed property before touching the scoop etc so they go with the boiling water as that's what would kill any bugs that may have gotten in during this time. To protect the company from 'my baby got ill from your milk' claims. In reality if you're scrupulous with your hygiene when dealing with powdered formula then the chance of any bugs being in it are extremely small, even if it's made up with cooled water X

Personally I just boil the kettle a few times a day and then use the water straight out of there to make up the bottles. So sometimes its boiling and sometimes its cold. xxx

I do this all the time. We don't boil water here. Just let the tap run to warm and fill the bottle to the level we want. I think it's more of a US thing to not boil the water.

I add formula to bottled room temp water and ive had no problems... do what works for you.

I've never noy done that and my LO has been fine
He always from day one has had the powder added to the cooled boiled water and then fed immediately.

I stopped using boiled water to prepare bottles at 6.5 mnths. He's already weaned & he's eating raw veggies & fruits which r not steril.

Ive always added powder to cooled water. So convenient as I never have to warm bottles and getting out and about is brilliant. So far we have had no tummy problems.

HV said to us that it is something to do with the bacteria in the milk and that bacteria starts to grow in the milk anyway as soon as its made up - so I guess she means that it is no worse than pre-making bottles and storing them in the fridge.
