Hi there this is the first time I have used this site and I am desperately looking for an answer. I have been frantically searching the internet to see whether my baby is constipated or not. I have recently changed her milk from SMA gold cap to Cow and Gate Comfort as my HV suspected that she was lactose intolerant as there was a period when she cried alot. Her poo is formed (in one clump) but can still be squashed down in her nappy, is this normal? Before I changed her milk her poo was all over her nappy but her poo just now could be picked up out of her nappy (as disgusting as that sounds). She does not cry when she is pooing just goes really red and pulls a cracker of a face. Some advice would be appreciated.

Didn't want to read and run although I'm not sure of any advice I can give. Sophie's had various spells when I thought she was constipated because she went up to a week without having any dirty nappies and seemed really uncomfortable and her stomach was really solid but the hv visitor said it didn't count as constipation unless the poo was hard and pellet-like.... Sophie's poos have always been soft and covered the whole nappy even after a week. Maybe changing the milk has affected your LO. I've noticed Sophie's poo is different since I stopped breastfeeding and also is a different colour since we changed from Aptimil to SMA.

Do you think your LO is uncomfortable when she's pooing? I guess it's hard to tell, especially if she doesn't cry with it.

Perhaps you should speak to your HV just to be sure...hopefully you will get some more helpful replies on here, sorry I've not been of much help.

I'm not sure they should be that hard but if she's comfortable enough when doing a poo maybe it's ok? How often does she go, I think they should go at least once a day that's all my LO does.
Maybe just try giving ur LO some cooled boiled water before each feed to see if that softens things up again?
Also is ur LO's belly hard or soft?

Omar used to strain & goes red while pooing when he was tiny, & his poo was ok. As long as she's having regular poos, there nothing to worry about. Giving her some cooled boil water is good to soften it. xx

Thanks for that. My LO goes about three times a day which makes me think that she can't be constipated. I forgot to mention that she is on Gaviscon also and the Cow & Gate Comfort formula is thicker so maybe this has just thickened it up when coming out the other end. Her belly seems soft. I will speak to my HV when i next see her. I am giving her cooled boiled water but it doesn't seem to be doing the trick xx
