We had Grace weighed today and since starting on bottles (last tues) she's put on 15 ounces this week and is now 10 pound 1. Is this too much for a month old baby?

The reason I ask is that my mum has a thing about formula fed babies being overweight. 15 ounces in a week? Normal or am I worrying too much.?

She has 5 ounces every 3 - 4 hours throughout the day

i would say no, all babies are different just like adults, shes feeding well and looks beautiful, all the malarchy about the weight and the centile i think is rubbish and not needed it just stresses the parents out!!

shes feeding well, shes healthy.. carry on...

tommy is 10 weeks he was weighed 2 weeks ago and was 9lb8, today he was 10lb 14oz and they were really pleased....but he was only 5lb 12oz born

She may have just gone through a growth spurt, hence the weight gain. I wouldn't really worry about it. Hannah weighs over 11 pounds (she weighed 10 pounds 14 ounces a week and a half ago, so she's probably closer to 11.5-12 pounds now )

Totally agree. Growth spurts. All babies are different. Kalea gained 11oz's in 10 days, birth weight 7lb 11oz, 10day weight 8lb 8oz. And health visitor wasn't worried.

Caitlyn put on 8oz in 3 days once and she's not exclusively bottle fed!!

Thanks ladies - you've put my mind at rest.

We'll carry on the way we are - I can't simply cut her feeds down she lets us know when she's hungry!!! And don't we know it.

Leeds - I'd go to clinic - I was so excited to find out her weight - give them a buzz xx

my HV came yesterday confusion with my surgery :dohh:

but shes now 7lb 5 oz at 13 days.... 6lb 2 at birth.... :) getting chubby

Here's a chart that will help you to know the average weight for your baby.

If you have gone over from exclusively breast there is bound to be a substantial increase as the bottle babies grow totally diff than the boobie babes. I wouldnt worry it will probably balance out by a few weeks :hugs:

Wouldn't worry at all. You can't cut down a babies milk intake, they let you know when they are hungry. If they happen to be a little chubby they will lose it all when they start to crawl/walk.

Nice chart. My little girl is the size of a 4 month old at 10 weeks! She is completely breastfed but was 9.9lbs at birth.

I wouldn't worry about the chart. According to charting Damien is the size of a three year old and you'd never know it in his structure. Babies are going to grow but they will lose all that weight as well once they start crawling and walking. By the time he left the care of the midwives here he was 11lbs 4oz and was 19lbs by the time he was 6 months old and then tapered down after that (which is when he started walking) and is VERY tall right now but only weighs around 29lbs.

Your child will grow the way they're suppose to right now and the more nutrition they get the better at this point. It will help their minds grow as well.

as someone else said every baby is different and the thing is even if she was putting on weight you couldnt cut her feeds down just because she was getting too chubby if she wants feeding then she wants feeding end of, especially as this is the most important time of her growth and development :)

hope you understand what i am saying

It is true that breast fed babies and formula fed babies grow at different rates. But I don't think formula fed babies are overweight  I know that Hannah's a big baby, she was big when she was born, but she's right where she's supposed to be growth wise

I have read before that bottle fed babies are more likely to be overweight cos its easier to overfeed....

... ive also read they are more likely to be overweight as adults...

..but one of the reasons i dont like breastfeeding is cos I dont know how much my LO is getting and then I give her a bottle aswell... so surely thats worse

i think as long as your HV is happy with their weight on the graphy thingy then everything is fine :)

 Oh if you try to give Hannah a bottle and she doesn't want it she screams at you

All babies are different. At 3 weeks Grace was 7lb 4oz, 2 weeks later she was 9lb 1oz but 2 weeks after that she was only 9lb 12oz

Getting her weighed again tomorrow so thanks for your messages ladies, I'll update you with any interesting info! xx xx
