Hello ladies, I am hoping some of you that have been through the IUI process may be able to help me with a query...

we are hoping to start our first cycle next month and received all the information through a little while ago. in the pack though was a pack of bcp! I have phoned the hospital today and asked what it was for and they said that I would take it for at least 21 days before treatment to put my ovaries to sleep so that they would then have complete control over them.

that sort of makes sense but has anyone else heard of this? I assume that this will extend the treatment also as I had expected to get the actual IUI in early March but presumably this will add 3 - 4 weeks? (Patience, I do not has it!)

I don't know if it makes any difference but we have been classed as unexplained infertility.

So, if anyone has any experience of IUI cycles with bcp, I'd be really glad to hear them!

Hey hun

Its similar to what is used in long protocol IVF. I have to go on BCP but this is so they can regulate my cycle and they have control over the planning side of it for their diary!!

A lot of clinics use BCP so that they can get their diaries straight and they can control when your period is going to be etc.

Good luck :dust:

thank you for your response!

I still can't quite fathom why they would want to do it just for iui when everything else is normal. but I guess that is their policy and way of treatment and not much I can say will change it!

it is a bit pathetic but I so want to have a baby this year and if they put me on bcp at the end of Feb for 3 weeks before the cycle can even start then my chances of a 2010 baby get slimmer and slimmer! and of course when I am ttc, taking bcp just feels like a step backward!

oh dear, I think I am just having the period blues. I am sure next week I will feel more optimistic, we are finally getting some help afterall and I have seen some great iui success stories here recently....

*stops rambling*

Bless you - be positive! Its still January and you have time!

We can't have our first IVF cycle until April and the wait inbetween cycles in 3 periods not to mention trying to find 5k for a cycle - but i believe by the end of this year i'll be pregnant and that's all that matters!!

As i said, clinics only tend to use BCP to regulate your dates - by putting you on BCP they can control when you will be ready to ovulate/have IUI - my cycles are regular as clockwork but when you are dealing with NHS and private they tend to do it so that they can fit all their patients in.
