I've been told by various midwives all the way through pregnancy that because my 15yr old was born with group b strep and was extreamly I'll that id have IV antibiotics whether I had vbac or section.

I told the consultant today that im opting for section and its all booked for 30th Jan but he said I won't be getting IV antibiotics for group b strep as im having an elective and won't need them. I understand its passed to baby in birth canal but it seems despite this in some hospitals they still give the antibiotics to safeguard baby anyway.

Does anyone have experience with this...did you have them despite having an elective? Xx

Hi I had IV abx (elective c sec) as tested gbs positive in early pregnancy.. My consultant told me I'd have the abx given during my section as precaution against wound/me becoming infected by anything but that it would also protect baby from gbs, although the gbs is only passed in birth canal unless waters have broken so not sure where the risk was for me?! Soto answer you yes I had abx but not sure what for really xx

Thanks for replying :) I just really don't want this baby to go through what my son did. I suppose some hospitals would rather take every possible measure and some don't see the point. I wish my consultant would give me the antibiotics my son was increadibly I'll i nearly lost him.

I have been looking on the net at some GBS sites and apparently the babies can catch it from in the womb although its more common they catch it in the birth canal.

I'm wondering whether I can insist on having them or if it really is a case of he said no so that's final? Xx

I'm sorry your son was so poorly.. GBS really needs more awareness, i think its shocking it's not tested for routinely in pregnancy..
I don't see any reason for you not bring able to have abx - I'd def ask at the pre op meeting when you speak to the consultant.. I really hope you can get it so you can relax and enjoy the whole experience xx

I beleive that everyone gets a dose of antibiotics during their surgery for wound protection. So that will help with your question. I would for sure ask your dr and make sure to ask in surgery before they start.
