Hi.
My partner and I have recently moved to Canada on two year working visa. We both have a good job lined up, but we have recently found out that we are expecting our first baby. It is a surprise, and we are happy about the news, but now all the questions are starting to skin in.

1). What is the general overall cost of doctor fees to have a baby?
2). Will our visa be effected because if the bub?
3). Once he/ she is born, will they receive a Canadian or Australian nationality?
4). am I entitled to parental leave from my employer?

Although I'm very early in my pregnancy, I would still like to have all the facts ahead of time. Any comments will be very much appreciated.

Jess.

First of all, congratulations!

I can't answer all your questions, but as a Canadian who recently gave birth to my first child in Australia, I do know that your child will have automatic Canadian citizenship and also be entitled to Australian citizenship too (Canada and the US are the only countries that give citizenship status to children born there to non-citizen parents).

As to the other questions, you're best asking a hospital what the costs are. I imagine they would vary depending on what part of Canada and the size of the hospital, not to mention whether its a vaginal or cesarean delivery etc. Would you consider having a home birth with a midwife or going to a birth centre? It would be significantly cheaper than a hospital I'm sure and I dont know of any insurance that covers childbirth after getting pregnant. Did you get any kind of health insurance seeing as you're living in another country for an extended period of time?

You may need to get the baby added to your visa, but seeing as s/he will be Canadian too, possibly not.

1). What is the general overall cost of doctor fees to have a baby? I can't answer this but what I can say is are u covered under any medical isnurance in canada? I know a few people with working visas and they also have free health insurance as long as they are paying taxes ect.
2). Will our visa be effected because if the bub? It shouldn't be.
3). Once he/ she is born, will they receive a Canadian or Australian nationality? Your baby will become Canadian by birth, but can aquire an Austrailian nationality if you want it too.
4). am I entitled to parental leave from my employer? You will be entitled to mat leave and parental leave up to one year, as long as you have paid in to CPP and have worked a min of 600 hours since becoming pregnant.

Although I'm very early in my pregnancy, I would still like to have all the facts ahead of time. Any comments will be very much appreciated.
