my first labour was 7 hours i ended up at the hospital 9 1/2 cm and had her 30 mins later. Now we have moved and planned on inlaws to have my LO. but they live at least 30-40 mins drive away without getting ready etc. BIL lives 20 min away but they both work so depending on time i go into labour depends who to phone. and lastly everyone except SIL is going on holiday for a week end of july -but to call her from work would take her nearly 2 hours to get to us if she is at work. Also my husband works 30-40 mins away if it happens crazy fast what will i do? Will my husband have to miss the birth to look after her in that instance? or did you have time to get childcare sorted before going to the hospital?

I will be stalking this thread, from the start of the drip to birth was only 4 hours 45 mins

I'm not really sure who I can ask to look after lo - It all depends on what time of the day it will be - I'm hoping lo's nursery teacher will be the best option

My advice would be first to try and not stress. I know it was fast last time. So was mine. Real contractions started at 7 and I had her at 11:08....but I think we sorta forget the few hours of "cramps" that are tell tale signs....so I bet the day of night you start labour you'll have plenty of time to phone dh and whoever else.

Worst case scenario and things just get out of hand. Throw yourself and DD in a cab and tell whoever to meet you there. I'm sure the nurses would be more than happy to entertain her until someone shows. Kids are adorable....people will be happy to entertain her!!!!

I have this problem too, My parents are planning on being here to look after the kids but they are only arriving 3 days before DD so who knows if i will make it that long. Otherwise DH will be with our kids and I will be birthing alone :( we have no one that can take the kids.

My parents are coming up too but just for a week or two at the most so they might not be here at the right time. We have several friends nearby so evenings/weekends will be ok but weekdays.. well, DS1 might end up being there for the birth! My labour was fast just about 4-5 hours from first contractions until he came out but really I felt weird and suspected waters leaking a few hours before that so there were earlier warning signs. My last labour started around 6pm so I'm hoping the same thing happens this time!

I'm looking at the possibility of having to take DD with me if LO comes when DH is out of town and I can't find anyone... but I have 10 weeks to figure it out :)

My first labor, I showed up at the hospital I was 3cm, 3 hours later I was 10cm and 5 min pushing and out came baby.
My second labor, I showed up at the hospital I was 4cm, 30 min later I was 10cm and 5 min pushing out came baby.
With both I had a couple hours of early labor with regular contractions that didn't hurt much, but were regular enough that I knew it was the real deal before active labor started and I knew to go to the hospital.
I made sure that as soon as I knew it was labor the second time that I let my friend (who'd be watching my first) know that I was in labor. The second the contractions started to hurt, even though they were still fairly far apart I headed to my friend's place to drop off my older boy and then straight to the hospital. I lied to the midwife about how close they were and that I was headed to the hospital because I just knew it was going to be a fast labor and I didn't want her to tell me that it was too early to go in. Luckily my friend lives by the hospital because it's about 15 min to her place and another 5 to the hospital and I was right to go early.
If she had been farther away, I'd have dropped my son off at her place while I was still in the earliest stages of labor.
I'd also checked ahead of time that it would be ok to bring my son with me into the labor ward in case things were going too fast. Then my friend could have picked him up/met us at the hospital.

thanks for your comments well everyone is back from holiday and no baby yet. had a tour of birth centre(gave birth in a hospital last time) and thankfully they have a little waiting room with a few toys that if need be we can bring dd1 with us and have her collected from there, so that is of some relief. of course OH wont be with me but the waiting room is literally seconds away from the delivery room. as soon as they are regular i will be calling mil so i hope that gives them plenty of time thing is i know how slow they drive so will probably be like torture till they arrive but still an improvement on my previous situation.

Hiya had my baby monday .Woke up at 6.30am having period like cramps every 4 mins lasting 20-30 seconds. i text my DH at work at 7am and said wait till 8 to see if regular. in the mean time i got DD1 bag ready just incase and cleaned the house. phoned birth centre to give them heads up they told me to sort childcare and call back once contractions lasted minute. told DH he got home at 9am had phoned his mum on the way they collected dd1. i laboured at home till they got to 4 minutes lasting aminute got to the centre at 1.10pm and she was born at 1.59pm. i got there just in time as they came more frequently once i got there and my waters broke after an examination i shot from 6-10cm instantly and after 7 mins of active labour she was here!

eta. my labour ended up being a similar time to my first -7 hours so not faster but glad my waters didnt go at home as she would've been born there!

assuming everyone is not out of town what I would do is get your crap together take your child with you to the hospital and have whoever pick her up from their.

My labors are VERY fast. When I went into early labor with my second we had no family lined up to watch our son, and it happened so fast we brought him with us. A couple nurses offered to watch our son until my FIL showed up to watch him (our son stayed with us in the hospital, so he only watched him in the waiting room during my c-section).
