Ugh, I was hoping to start my my leave on April 28th... But found out that my company is closing their doors on Feb. 4th... Much needed stress, needless to say, I hope unemployment Canada finds me as a special case and will work with me since I've never claimed EI benefits in the 6 years Ive been working. UGH!!!

I am not sure how this works in Canada, but in the USA, if you're unemployed through no fault of your own you are definitely entitled to Unemployment benefits. Here the max you can get in Arizona is only $240 a week =/ So it isn't much but it helps! Sucks that they're laying you off like this, but it'll give you time to spend with baby, and hopefully finding work after you're ready will work out quickly!

Wow, its only just over $100 a week in the UK. I know it probably seems really tough at the moment, but things have a way or working themselves out hun - hope it all works out for you x

$240 US dollars = 154.44 Pounds =/ So it's about the same probably? ... Our dollar is sad right now :(

We get £128.pp and it's going up to £135.pp in April so still better off in Canada lol. Also our pay is the same through out no matter where we live (unless maybes London etc but I'm not 100%) so the cost of living is never taken in to account - it is what it is lol. But anything is better than nothing eh :flower:

I am from Canada and was laid off when I was 6 months pregnant with my son. Luckily my husband had a stable income so he supported us until I claimed maternity! In Canada you can start claiming EI if you are within 17 weeks of your due date I believe. So you could always claim it early. In Canada you get a FULL year of maternity pay from the government (we are very lucky), So 1 year from the date you submit the form.
I claimed mine a month before my due date.

Back in the DAY the US did cost of living raises. Now there are a LOT of hiring/salary freezes so those don't happen. People are lucky to get small yearly raises too =/

:( I wish I was Canadian now.

Yeah, same here. I'm just thankful I have a job my only pay rises in 4 years have been because basic minimum wage has gone up, or I've aged in to the next "wage" bracket so the company has no choice but to give it. But I also know we're better off in the UK than most so no complaining from me

:flower:

I hope you can get through this without the stress.

I don't know how things are in other states but I do know mine has the highest pay amount for unemployment wages. People used to drive up here from Florida to file unemployment. They've since put in a policy to only allow people who worked in the state to file here. I get $410/wk with my unemployment. This is based on my normal work pay ($14/hr @~45+ hrs a week) and the four months I worked third shift ($25/hr @~70+ hrs a week) and I think they do it for a year or a year and a few months back. I didn't file straight away after my layoff as I was injured and unable to work and that's one of the questions you answer - if you can work. It sucked, and it was very stressful, but it is behind me now.

I can get up too $370/ week in Canada, but, because of my mat leave, I dont know how EI will go about it, need to in to Service Canada on Monday and figure things out. Not too worried, figured it out and i'll be 16 weeks before my due date, and you can start Mat leave 17 weeks before hand. So might just start early, which will suck on some level.. But whatever!

Yeah, I was talking to HR and she thinks because of i have worked for the company for three years, and never filled a EI claim I may be able to actually get a few extra weeks added on to my year off, so will see. Either way im not too worried. My spouse has a good income and covers the bills, my pay was more or less our play money. Though I still freaked last night haha.

I responded in your other post that I think you could go on EI for unemployment and still qualify for mat/ child leave at the time you were planning- if you continue to pay premiums.

Good luck!
