Does it have to be 30 mins? i've just read in the baby book i got from hv no longer than 30 mins so can it be less like 15 mins or so as long as its fully cooled? xxx

yeah think they just say 30 mins to ensure its cooled properly, tbh i just made up the water then added the formula as i needed the bottle and heated it up and found that suited me better. How is Daisy going with formula? Kx

As long as its boiled tap water it is fine - they say leave to cool so you do not scald yourself or LO. I pour the water into the bottles maybe after about 10 mins - the same time it takes for the bottles to sterilise and cool as I put the kettle on at same time!

The official guidelines tell you to leave it no more than 30 minutes - after that time it goes below 70 degrees, which is the temperature at which any bacteria in the powder should be killed.

The formula manufacturers instructions say to leave it exactly 30 minutes - I suspect because they don't want to be sued if anyone scalds themselves!

According to the official information, if you're going to make up the bottle at any time other than 30 mins after the kettle boiled, it should be earlier. As long as you're careful not to scald yourself, the only other problem to making it up when it's hotter is that the steam makes the powder clog up the scoop.

Some people allow the water to cool to room temperature and then add the powder when they're ready to use it. It's up to you if you want to try that - lots of people do it, although it's not officially recommended.

Hi this is what i do, with the scoop problem either have more than one so you can change it when its clogged or clean it with the water just boiled in the kettle  xx

we make up 6 bottles at a time, by putting boiled water in each and then put them in the fridge until we need them. It makes life so much easier as you don't need to wait half an hour every time you want a bottle, and the mw and hv both said that this is fine.

If formula isn't in the water the bacteria can't breed. We just warm it up at each feed with hot water in a jug and put bottle in! I refuse to pay £40 for a bottle warmer that takes longer!

I usually leave it around 15-20 minutes... 8 minutes while the steriliser is running it's course, and then 5 minutes or so for the unit to cool down a little! ;)

Oh ETA that I make up my bottles in advance too. I just fill the bottles up and leave them on the counter till I'm ready to use them, heat one up a little as Evie hates room temp bottles, and just add the powder which has already been measured and stored in dispensers.
With my first, it was ok to make the bottles up, add the formula and store them at the back of the fridge which I used to do, but the way I do it now is better as it doesnt take as long to heat up a room temp bottle as opposed to a fridge temp bottle :)

I (well OH as he makes bottles lol) leaves it about 15 mins. I always add the powder within 30 mins though as adding powder to cooled water will not kill any bugs in the powder. :)

I make up 16 bottles at once and just boil the kettel when I start and sterilise four at a time for 6 mins then add the water - so some are straight from the kettle and some at the end will be more than 30 mins I would imagine

I was wondering why you were using 16 a bottles a day, and then I realised you had twins ;)

Doh haha. xxx
