So at 10:30 pm on 27th September I had my first contraction. I let my hubby sleep as I thought that I would be a while and tried to get some sleep. The contractions were really irregular so I wasn't worried! These carried on all night at random intervals from 5 minutes to 1 minute apart! I managed to get broken sleep in between them, and at around 3am I could not sleep any longer. They still were irregular and even though the contractions were lasting between 40-60 seconds, so they were quite regular, but the gap between them was still between 4 and 1 minute long! Anyway, I decided to wake Lance up at just gone 4:30 and we rang my mum and got read to ring the midwife to come over as were a planned home birth. We rang L&D to be told that the midwives were all on call and we'd have to go in! Something inside me said to not argue and just go, so we did. We woke my son and dropped him at my mums, and drove straight to the hospital. About halfway there I told Lance I felt I needed to push...but I didn't! Anyway. We arrived at the hospital at around 5:30am on September 28th. And midwifes got me into a room and she said... "Can I just see how far along you are? Oh, there's the head!" haha! She then popped my waters and I immediately felt the urge to push. I started pushing and Lily was born at 5:47am (17 minutes later!!)! No tears or grazes or anything! YAY!
She was so purple when she was born! It was the first thing I said! Lance checked her sex! We were then left to it in the room for a while to get breastfeeding established and have some time on our own. I noticed a gush of blood that felt a bit much but thought nothing of it, until I felt another...so we called the midwife in and she checked me over, and decided to call the doctor in. He looked and then decided I was having a PPH. So everything went really quickly now. Loads of doctors and midwives came in and it was determined that my uterus wasn't contracting, but relaxing, so the blood vessels weren't getting clamped. A midwife injected me with the stuff they use for a managed third stage (forgotten name lol) twice, once in each leg. And throughout the time they were trying to stop my bleed I had two more injections in each leg. My legs are now killing from the jabs
And after what Lance says was just over three hours of massaging my uterus manually while checking blood flow and injecting me with things, including putting a drip in and a transfusion needle (just in case) The bleeding slowed to normal and I narrowly missed theatre. I lost 1.8 litres of blood, so was required to stay in overnight, which I really didn't want to do but am glad I did now (will explain in next paragraph) Throughout all this I was drifting in and out of sleep and consciousness and Lance was holding Lily just at the side of my head the whole time! She was so good and slept the whole time! I kept worrying about her though!
After the bleeding stopped they cleaned me up and transferred me to the ward. I was still attached to the drip and had a catheter and my transfusion needles still in, just in case. They did a load of blood tests to check my iron levels and I was given painkillers too. They weighed Lily and she was a whopping 9lb 5oz! Totally didn't look it though! I felt so weak and ill from all the drugs that I fell asleep when we got on the ward and Lance had a nap too! He popped out to update everyone on progress via phone calls. I was still quite woozy and managed about 4 chips for lunch. I slowly got better and more energetic and eventually, at about 7pm, they took out my catheter so I could walk about!
Later that night, I threw up my dinner, and needed painkillers, the same thing happened at about midnight, then I woke up about 1am itching everywhere. The nurses gave me a piriton tablet and after it kicked in I was fine! Lily slept from about 12am through to 5am, then to 7am...so I got a really nice sleep in!!
