Hi all
LO has a lip tie, we're going to hospital on Friday for an assessment but I was just wondering if anyone had experience of this and what happened. Currently LO can't fish lip out on the top and most often curls his lip in which effects his ability to latch and can be very painful.

It seems rare to be picked up in the UK and most people haven't heard of it

I am in the us and we found the lip and tongue tie revised at 9 days for our son. Made a world of difference in his ability to latch and saved our breastfeeding experience. Be aware that a tongue tie normally goes with a lip tie and i think the tongue tie affects latch more than the lip. Good luck!

It is rarely picked up here, my son has lip tie but because he is gaining weight they don't think they need to do anything, his upper lip curls in too when he feeds and I still get discomfort, but the pain now wouldn't be worth me getting in anything done to him.

Thank you both. I think I can work through the pain but have heard that a severe lip tie can cause teeth to grow through with a gap and can lead to a speech delay - it's this that worries me the most. Although it would be nice to avoid the painful latch!

He's been checked for a tongue tie but I'm sure the specialist will check again on Friday in case it's been missed.

My husband had a lip tie causing him to have a gap between his teeth but he breastfed easily and MIL says no pain! Also he had no issue with speech, so I think everyone is different.

we didnt find out DD had liip tie until she was gone 2 years old at the dentist, it explained for us why BF was so unbelievably painful and led to us giving up 9 days in, her gap was uite big between her front teeth but it has never ever effected her speech in any way, she was a very early talker and her pronunciation is fantastic, shes now 3 and as all the rest of her teeth have come in its made the gap a bit smaller, but my dentist said lip tie doesnt really affect speech so they dont tend to do anything with it, by looking at my son he too has liptie his top lip doesnt curl out however he has breastfed with no problems and no real pain either x
