Our Yellow bump turned into a beautiful baby girl on 25th May at 38+6
Just a quick birth story that will hopefully let first time mums know that not all first baby labours are long and agonising or go overdue!
I woke up at about 4am on 25th, not feeling anything, just my usual late pregnancy can't sleep/get comfy, so got up and watched a bit of tv and ended up having little doze on the sofa. At about 8am I felt a bit of what I thought was trapped wind and went to the loo where I had a BM and noticed my panty liner was a bit wet but I thought I'd maybe leaked a bit of wee as I wasn't expecting baby anytime soon!
About half hour later I had another pain in my stomach but it wasn't anything unbearable and again I didn't put it down to baby. I carried on with my morning, showering, stripping bed, cleaning etc... But noticed I got a few more pains. I phoned my DH and he said phone midwife. I finally called at 12pm and she said it sounded like early labour. I could still talk, walk, and didn't feel I needed any pain relief. I called my husband and he said he'd make his way home. He got home about 1:30pm and I was having to lean against the kitchen work top during what I realised now were contractions but still didn't find them too painful. They were only lasting about 20-30 seconds but were close together. We went into living room and DH started to pump up the gym ball I wanted to use but by time he'd done it I was in all fours gripping the side of the sofa with contractions very close together. He called the midwife for me and she suggested running a bath to relax me.
DH started to run a bath but I had to yell for him as I started to feel a lot of pressure. I knew then baby was close and got him to call back and say i felt pressure and wanted to come in.
He got my bags, put them in the car and then helped me in to it. I remember getting in the car and seeing the time was 2:23. I was by now gripping the side of the car seat and trying not to shout and fighting the strong urge and pressure I felt. I then felt my waters break properly. The hospital is a short drive and he just left the car at the drop off bit, got me in a wheelchair and were taken straight to labour ward. I managed to get my jeans off to be examined and was offered gas and air which was amazing. I remember my DH saying his car was just in the drop off bit and he was told not to go anywhere!
I the got myself on my knees leaning against the back of the bed as its what felt comfy and took a puff of gas and air when I felt my contraction. I was very surprised when I was asked "didn't you want to push with that one?"
I gave a big push next contraction and head was out, the cord was around babys neck so they had to sort that out, but then another 2 pushes and she was born at 2:56pm. I asked DH what we had and with a tear in his eye he told me we had a little girl! He then cut her cord and helped me take my top off so I could have skin to skin with her. We had a lovely hour just the 3 of us and her skin to skin with me the whole time and she had her first breastfeed. She was then weighed and measured and was a healthy 6lb 13oz and 55cm long. I had only a very minor graze which didn't need any stitches so was very lucky!
So all you first time mums, you don't always go overdue, have long labours or need stitching! Oh and to that thing we all hate the thought of doing - you don't care!! I knew I had a little bit but didn't give a fig!
My beautiful daughter is 4 weeks old tomorrow and a little darling. She's breastfeeding brilliantly and gaining weight like a trooper. I can't imagine life without her now.
