Hello, I lost my job last week :( and struggling to find other work. I just put in a claim for income support whilst looking (already get housing, child tax & child Ben)
I have been thinking maybe to start college & actually get a recognised qualification so not just doing dead end jobs but worried about how I will support myself.. Am I still entitled to help??
I have worked full time from the age of 16 so have contributed more than enough tax to not feel bad about claiming :)
Anyone here a single parent and studying? Tia

I don't have any answers- as I live in the states, so our benefits are very different here. But, school or not, there should be help for single parents that need it. I was unemployed for 3 mos after a lay off- and tbh, it wasn't the worst thing. It was hard, but I found new work and just enjoyed the time off. Part of me wished I'd taken that opportunity to go back to school for a new career- but I'd worked so hard to get where I was (no schooling)- that I just figured I'd stick with it. But 4yrs later- I'm wishing I'd gone to school so I'd be done by now and into a new career-- so if you can go back, then do it!

Maybe see if there are some answers at the benefits office? Or maybe you can go to their online site and look at questions. Or hopefully someone else in your area has better insight. Best of luck hun!

Hi
Yes you can do a college course and course fees will be paid, I think rules are your 1st level 2 course is free and if you progress to level 3 you have to take a loan from student finance/Gov to cover the fees. Hope this helps there should be more info on DirectGov and college websites.
