Hubby and I are really struggling to pick a boy's name. We both really like the name Lennox, but we absolutely hate the nicknames Len or Lenny. Even if we don't shorten the name, kids at school, on sports teams, etc likely will, so we feel it is inevitable that it will get shortened. Would you still use the name?

I wouldn't. We both really loved the name Jacob but disliked the nickname Jake so ruled it out

I guess it depends how much I dislike the nickname, like u say once they are at school etc you don't really get any input into what the other kids would call him. Ps: I think Lenny is a cute nn.

We have oscar and people are starting to call him ozzzy. Im ot overly kean on it but i guess we dont get to pick the nick name. We just call him osc

I think with an obvious nickname grab like that it's bound to happen eventually, so if it's something I wouldn't want people calling my kid, I wouldn't use the name.

you cant control nicknames, ive picked up some through life that have nothing to do with my name

what about Knox as a nn?

If you don't like the nickname at all then I wouldn't use the name, my sister is Elizabeth, my mum hates the nickname lizzy and so used the nickname beth and although we call her beth at school and others used to call her lizzy all the time so no matter how much you try avoid it it's going to happen, I like the nickname Lenny I think it's cute, I love the name Lennox but my OH doesn't :(

If you really hate it and will get annoyed every time you hear Len or Lenny... then you will have to choose a different name so you don't feel PO'ed all the time! lol

BUT I think you have a lot of power over the nickname in the first years. Friends and family will probably respect you and follow your lead. Daycare should also respect you enough to call your kid the chosen nickname... Once they're at school though, it's a bit out of your hands BUT it's easier to accept the nickname knowing your child made his own decision about allowing it/using it, no?

I wouldn't use it if you genuinely hate the nickname (which in this case is quite an obvious one) I loved the name Florence but couldnt wrap my head around her being call Flo, just dont really like it so I avoided it.

I am fine with the nickname Knox or Nox, but since Len/Lenny is a more obvious nickname I think it would probably catch on once the kid is in school. Oh well, back to searching for a name! Thanks for your input guys!

name searching is hard.... i feel for you. good luck mama! and congrats!

Love the nickname. Want to call my LO Lennard, but OH hates it. Would call him Len or Lenny myself. With Lennox, nickname is bound to happen. If you really don't like it, don't go with it. My brother had a nickname and when friends came for him at the door asking if 'Billy' was home, my father would say 'Billy doesn't live here and shut the door. Funny now.

We don't like a lot of nicknames in general, so we have to be careful with a lot of longer names, even if we like them. People shorten my name all the time (their own doing), and I don't like it!

Phoenix was a name I liked, although I probably wouldn't have actually used it. Still, it was on my list, but then I heard someone call their son "Pheny" (Think Mr. Feeny.) That name became an absolutely not! I hate it now.

My little boy is Nicolaas, I'm not overly fond of Nick or Nicky and in South Africa (where his dad is from) Nico is the nickname for Nicolaas so we went with that. Introducing him we say Nico, we only use Nicolaas for official things. So far only 1 or 2 people have tried to call him Nicky but I corrected them. He's 3 now and so far so good.
