So my beautiful girl, Lucie Rosalia, came into the world on 12th July 2012. I thought i'd share our story. I used just gas for pain relief.
At 5am on July 11th, i felt a pop and a flow of water. I had been expecting a 'gush' so i wasn't sure at first if it was my waters that had gone. I checked my pad and it was wet (clear fluid) As it was 5am i thought i'd be nice & let my DH sleep. At 6.09am i got my first contraction. I was getting them every 8-10 minutes. I called labour ward who said as my waters had gone i was to go in and be checked over. DH had to go to work to let someone in so whilst he was gone i bathed and got myself ready to go in. We got to the ward at around 11am and i was checked. I was still getting regular contractions but sadly cervix was still closed. I was sent home but i had to go back next day at 9am to try augmentation. At around 15.00pm that afternoon, i was irregular contractions every 4-6 mins. I called L&D who said if i was coping and managing the pain at home, then i was to stay at home. I was told to call again if i could no longer manage the pain. So at 20.00pm, i called back to say it was a tad painful but was told to still stay at home as 'it didn't sound like i was in pain'. I went through the night with painful contractions. Had about 3 baths, took paracetamol. I was very relieved to see 8.15am when it was time to go to hospital!
Upon examination the MW (& i) were shocked to learn i was 6cm dilated! She told me to go for a short walk, bounce on the ball etc. At 14.30pm when i was examined again, i was still 6cm. I was given Pitocin/Oxytocin at around 15.30pm to give my contractions a jump start. At 20.30pm, i got my first real urge to push. I could hear the MW saying to my DH that i wasn't due to to be examined for another 1/1 1/2 hours. After a 2nd urge to push, i said to the MW i really need to push! She examined me & i was fully dilated. The gas was taken from me and i was told to concentrate! After quite a few pushes, the MW got me up to try go to the toilet. I was like are you serious?!!! She had the right idea though as soon as i got up my urge to push was really strong and our little lady soon entered the world at 22.53pm, weighing 7lbs 10oz.
I have to say the experience wasn't as bad as i thought it was going to be. The worst bit for me was when she was checking me for rips/tears etc. Had to have the gas again for that! I feel very lucky to have had the labour that i did have. I knew from the start i didn't want to have an epidural or other pain relief, apart from gas. The only reason i decided not to have anything other than gas was because i had got to 6cm by myself at home. Had i been in hospital, it may have been a different story!!!
DH & i are totally loved up with her. Its hard work at times but she's worth it all. I hope everyone else is enjoying their beautiful LO's just as much
