Can someone please tell me the best way to deal with indigestion/heartburn? I ate some cheese sticks with marinara sauce and then took a nap and woke to burning in my chest and stomach...I drank some milk and it helped some but its back with a vengeance

I was talking with a lady from my church last week about heartburn and she said the best think for it is to eat some apple. I have not tried it yet but it sounds interesting.

Zantac or Prilosec works really well with heartburn.

I'll actually wake up with that burning feeling in my throat (almost like the food is coming back up). I just take a couple of Tums and head back to bed. If I take them before bed, I can normally make it through the night without an event.

My heartburn's been pretty bad, triggered even by my water. I didn't have any morning sickness at all. So, if this is the worst symptom for me - I'll still consider myself very blessed/lucky.

Ive heard several things that are supposed to work. I have heard that fuji apples work best for the apple thing and to remove the skin. Also, try to avoid eating too close to laying down/sleeping. Apparently laying on your left side helps with acid as well. (along with laying elevated in some way)

Other than that, for minor to moderate acid/heartburn, TUMS have been working just fine for me. I do have GERD and have a medication for that but my midwife suggested I go off of it during my pregnancy. It's Category B but she still suggested it. But, when it gets really bad, I take my GERD medication (pantoprazole) and it actually helps me for several days.

So tomato sauce gives me bad heartburn.. I guess because it's still acidic so I avoid it. That and peanut butter. I take tums when needed but my midwife just told me papaya helps a ton with it so will be trying that next time. There is a lot I've read that says milk will help temporarily but other things in it will make it come back worse later so I avoid that. I've tried an apple and it actually does seem seem to help some surprisingly!

When my husband was having really bad GERD issues I got him some papaya antacids and they were much better than the tums. He hated the taste though so went back to tums. *sigh* men... I tried them and they tasted fine. There is also a pregnancy specific antacid called Tame The Flame. I haven't tried it because I actually had heartburn problems before I got pregnant but absolutely none after. Probably because I have so many food aversions.

Gaviscon if you can get hold of it! Consistency leaves a lot to the imagination but it works wonders!

I took 1 teaspoon of baking soda in water when I had gastritis from antibiotics in 2014. Calms things right away and does not have such a strong effect on your stomach acid long term.
Tums and such can permanently lower the stomach acid which will invite a variety of health problems.
