Sorry if there is a similar thread on this somewhere but I was hoping we could share any little tips and tricks we had for making christmas / santa etc really magical for the little ones. My eldest son will be 11 this year and is slightly past this but I have had so much fun over the past 10 years keeping the magic alive for him. I cant wait to do it all again for my new baby (altough she will only be 6 months this christmas!) Here are some of the things we have done - add yours.

I always write my own santa letter to son - i dont use those internet sites because you can make it so much more personal, funny etc yourself. I just download a christmassy background and print it. In our house santa delivers letters through the fireplace and you can buy Lapland stamps from most card shops if you wanted it to come through the front door

Letters TO santa with christmas lists are written and left by the fireplace for the elves to collect on the 1st December. In the morning the list would be gone but there would be a small bit of ash on the floor. We would explain the letter gets burned up the chimney and flys to the northpole where it magically comes back together again for Santa to read

We would visit a santa every year at our local store but I would get someone to take son to a shop while I went to the santa first and give him the letter my son had written. So when he went to see the Santa he would pull it out of his pocket. That one always worked a treat. Works even better if you make a colour copy of their letter and ACTUALLY let them see their letter burn. They are amazed to see the letter is with Santa again after they think they have burnt the only copy.

Around November we start to 'see' the elves in the sky who are checking up on the children. Its amazing if you suddenly stop when walking down the street and stare up at the sky at some imaginary light that the child can 'see' it too

I have other things too but have to feed the baby so cant write them all out now! What things do you do? I need new ideas!

When we were little my gran used to leave a real Christmas tree outside our front door, she would then leave before we could see, we were told Father Christmas had left it for us and thats what we believed.

We also always made a big thing about decorating the tree, it was always me, my brother, my mum, dad/step-dad and my gran and we would all do it together and sing/listen to Christmas songs.

lol - we do that too its great fun. We also have a cake decorating competition. We make loads of christmas cakes (although you could just buy them) then about a week before Christmas we get loads of cake decorations / icing etc and each decorate a cake.

We always make a big deal out of the tree aswell, and writing a letter to santa.
I always really liked what Jade Goody did for her boys in her programme, where she sprinkled loads of talc on the floor so it'll looked like snow and then walked through it to make it look like santa had walked through the house.
Loved that, will def be doing it for Seren.

Tesa, I love your ideas, I'll definatley be copying some of them.

We do the letter from Santa (I've kept last years, going to keep them all and then give them to him as proof when he starts disbelieving). We're going to do the talc one as well, and also put some glitter in the fireplace before christmas morning, from when santa used his magic to get down the fireplace!

we havent got a chimney so for those who dont u can buy special keys to hang on the front door, so santa can let himself in :)

we have made footprints on the floor the last couple of years, but we brought fake snow stuff from the garden centre, u just a bit of water and it expands, very easy to hoover up! we made a footprint out of card tho. and did it all the way from the front door to the xmas tree where the presents were :)

When my mum helped out with the Rainbows (Girl Guiding group for little girls about 5 years old I think for the non Uk mums/dads) they made "special" reigndeer food to sprinkle outside for all Santas reigndeers to eat when they landed.

It was basically porridge oats and glitter combined and then put into a small bag for the kids to sprinkle in the garden.

Obviously they didnt have the glitter and oats in their origional packaging...

My mum and Dad also took a bite out of the pie and carrot and drank the milk we left out to make it look like Santa had eaten some of the pie (he didnt want to get too full or fat so didnt eat the whole thing....although I never understood why he took the carrot to the reigndeer then brought it back with a chunk out:shrug: I say take the whole carrot santa for your reigndeer!!

Wellll this year im going to put my LO on christmas jammys and read him a christmas book before bed :), going to put out a carrot mince pie and drink for santa and rudolf. and then when my lil one is asleep before i go to bed, eat the mince pie hehe, drink the drink and take the carrot back so it looks like they have been eaten, and put glitter and talc footprints on the floor from the door to the tree :). oooh i cant wait, also leave a not from santa for my LO saying merry christmas and that he came and saw him when he was asleep etc. xx

I am really excited this year as they are 4 and 6 and understand more about xmas and believe in santa so it will be so special :)

We always got to open 1 present on Christmas eve and it was always pyjamas! lol
We used to have a bath,. put out PJ's on, then off to bed to wait for Santa, when my parents went to bed they used to bang so me and my siblings thought it was santa on the roof! lol

Aw I can't wait for my own little family for christmas to be magical again.
I'd always go to my Nain's (Nanna's to those who don't know what Nain is) on the christmas eve day and watch all the christmas films. Me and my sister always used to get new pyjamas for christmas eve, have a bath then get into our pyjamas. We'd then put out a carrot on a small plate for the reindeer (although dont know why they would need a plate lol) and a mince pie and milk for santa on the table. We didnt have a chimnee, we were told he just had a special key to open the door. I remember one christmas day when my dad got in from work (he was working mornings so would of left at about 5am) he said he seen santa flying over the houses and he waved to my dad. I believed him for years lol.
I'm hoping when we have a LO of our own we would be in a house with a fire place so i can use some nice ideas from here =)

we did the new pjs and bath etc on xmas eve and now i do it for my kids :)

love some of these, i will always remember when i was about 7 my mum and her partner had me leave some sherry, mince pies and carrots out, and when i got up there was all glitter over the floor, snow hand prints on the window, chewed up carrot spat all over the floor, the sherry glass tipped over with some of it on the table and mince pie crumbs on the floor, and by the tree was a letter from santa saying 'MERRY CHRISTMAS LOVE FROM SANTA XX
P.S. SORRY ABOUT THE MESS'

Such a lovely thread :) I can't wait till my LO is old enough for me to be able to do some of these things!! We always left sherry and a mince pie out for Santa. He always just took a bite out of the mince pie, but NEVER left the sherry ;) lol. I remember the last Xmas I believed in Santa, we stayed at my sisters, and I was so worried that he wouldn't know I was at my sisters! My mum and sister stayed up and shook some bells in the early hours of the morning and I was sooo relieved Santa had found me!!! Haha.
