Mandatory Blood?

Someone told me that if you have a c-section you have to get a blood transfusion. The doctor hasn't mentioned anything about it, but if it's true I would like to have me (if possible), DH , and my parents bank some blood that they could use for me beforehand. Having twins I'm told I have a 50% chance of needing a section. Does anyone know if this is true?

No its not true, you would only need a transfusion if you a have a significant amount of blood loss. That applies to either type of delivery c section or vaginal.

As pp said no its not standard for that to happen. I'm sure they'd be a mass blood shortage if it were true and we'd all have to give blood to keep it going!

No you don't need one, unless there are complications. I signed a form to say I would allow one but in 3 sections haven't needed one.

Its not standard, they were going to give me one but only because my haemoglobin levels were so low and in the end they rose by 0.2 a few days later so it was cancelled in favour of supplements! It was known the entire time that i'd be at risk of needing a transfusion tho and i did end up with an emcs so that was a risk even before the section came into it, we took steps to avoid it by giving me injections twice a week from 28 weeks, your best way to avoid it would be to eat as much iron rich foods as possible and make sure your doctor keeps a close eye on your blood tests

I had a EMCS after 3 hour of pushing and LO getting stuck. He was so stuck that even during the section they couldn't get him out. It finally came to a point where they had to forcefully pull him out. This resulted in my uterus ripping up both sides. Even after all that, I didn't need a transfusion and none of my friends who had CS's have needed them either.

I did have a transfusion, but it was a very serious situation the occurred during an EMCS. Almost exactly the same as above (baby got stuck after 3 hours of non-progressive pushing and was stuck so badly they couldn't get her out during c-section), but I didn't rip, they cut an inverted T on my uterus. I also had a uterine infection before the surgery. So it didn't contract so the bleeding could stop.

After ALL those complications, I needed a transfusion. But no one else I know needed one ever, even in EMCS. It really does take a lot of blood loss to bring that about.

I didn't have a blood transfusion with my C-Section.

I did however have one about 3 weeks after my VBAC.

I had one cos I had an emcs though due to my placenta haemmoraging and I lost alot if blood on way to hospital

Not true. I had a planned csection with my first and an emergency csection after a failed vbac with my second. They will ONLY give you blood if you need it.

I had to have a section after a lengthy failed induction and did not need a transfusion. They did have me sign papers beforehand though giving permission for a transfusion if there were complications and one was needed.
