Hi all just hoping for some advice re: metformin from anyone who's had to take it? x

My FS has just prescribed me 100mg clomid and metformin, she said to start on 1 tablet a day and build up to 2 then 3 eventually. Well I took my first tablet yesterday shortly after lunch and I felt awful for the rest of the day :( in the end I had to take immodium because it upset my stomach so much. I've heard / read this is a common side effect and it should subside with time I was just wondering if anyone can share their experiences or perhaps offer some advice to help minimise the side effects.

I've read if you have a break after building up a tolerance the side effects will come back, I'm going away this weekend so I don't want to let side effects get in the way so I'm wondering if I should just start it when I get back Monday  ? I don't know if I am suffering particularly because I am a bit prone to IBS anyway :coffee:

Also while I'm asking .. anyone have any experience of norethisterone??

I was on norethisterone and liked it. I've been on medication for a while so it was nice to shut my system down and recover. No side effects!

I took a week between pills to build it up in my system. And it is true if you take a break you need to start over.

I have found that not eating a lot of sugar and carbs helps with some of the side effects.

I also have the side effects go away after 3-5 days so you wouls probably be fine for this weekend as long as you stay at the current dose.

Since you are trying to get pregnant norethiserone should not be taken during pregnancy. It is a class x drug.

Thank You x

I think the norethisterone is to induce a period as my cycles are so irregular, I was wondering how long it would take for my period to start? I read in the leaflet I think 2 days after the last pill but I wondered if that was accurate ...
Last time I went through this process I took provera so I have no idea why she didn't give me that (different doctor I guess)

thanks for the advice about metformin, is it ok to take immodium shortly after?! or will that mess things up? lol x

I just started metformin as well. I found that taking it with food and eating healthy really minimized the effects.

I started Metformin a few months ago and have been up to my FULL dose of 4pills a day for a month now!! Ur Dr should have suggested a change in diet u should cut out sugar No White bread white rice white potatoes so basically BAD carbs!!
Also I take all mine at Nite W dinner u should always take it w food HTH!!

When I took norethisterone it did not induce a period it stopped everything. I had a cyst and they shut my system down to try to help it go away.

I have been on Metformin about 3 weeks now started on 2 a day then 3 and now 4. At first it was giving me quite bad diarrhoea, however i persisted with it and eventually it did get better, my doctor told me if it gets too bad to go back down, so if its really bad on 3 a day just take 2. Sorry i can't be of much help x

I was on metformin for a few months - I ended up taking myself off it because it wasn't working; but the first two weeks was the worst on it; but i did build up somewhat of an intolerance. I took 1 tablet for one week, then 2 for a few days, then 3 - then the 4. I was quite spewwy and felt real seedy - but eating with the tablets and adjusting my diet did help a lot :) - as did taking it then going for a walk or something. I found the nausea took about half an hour to hit - but the fresh air definitely helped lesson the sick feeling.

My doc put me on slow release in the end but even after being on it 6 months or so, I still get a bad tummy every now and then. If I eat too much or have too much garlic it's quite bad. Carbs also effect it badly.
