Hi girls!

So this is my first time taking metformin 500mg 3xdaily! Not really sure what to expect or even how it works lol any advice?? Had 5 rounds of clomid few years back one successful resulting in an ectopic and have one child. Done a couple of rounds this year with no luck! And recently been prescribed metformin for pcos! Ready to do it properly!!

Any metformin mummy's to be want to share your journeys??

Xxxxx

Hi jiji, i take 500mg thrice daily also! I had awful side effects for the first week or so, with bad stomach and sickness etc! But got better after that first week unless i eat too many carbs/too much sugar.

Since being on met i've lost 20lbs and either losing the weight or the met have meant my cycles are regular. I have insulin resistence due to the pcos which is now under control :D

I take the 500MG pills 4 times a day! My endo started me out with just one a day for 2 weeks, then 2 a day, then 3 a day, and then finally 4 a day... so it took 1.5 months to get up to my full dosage.

I've had a bit of the runs after eating, but my body has pretty much settled down now, and I rarely have any issues. It's been about a month or so since I went to the full dosage now.

Awesome! I'm hoping that I get there too. I still haven't had a natural cycle, but I've had a 1.5 of heavy spotting which both my OB and I think is a great sign of things to come. That's great about the weight loss too! I've lost 33 pounds myself, and I'm aiming to try and lose another 55 pounds. I have a follow-up with my endocrinologist and I'm really hoping to see that I'm starting to get my insulin resistance under control as well.

Kudos to you!

Dodge i really found a low gi diet helped! I test my blood sugar daily and it has been within the "normal" limits everytime. Gl to you huni x

Hi girls, thanks for the replies!

Do any of u take anything else?

Also can anyone explain how it works?? I no I sound completely thick my gyno just said that it's proven to work for pcos. But in the leaflet in the box it doesn't mention it once. I'm not over weight or don't experience much of the syndrome just the pain, longer cycles and infertility xxx

As far as I understand, PCOS is a hormone imbalance and Metformin helps to get that imbalance back into balance. So while you aren't overweight like me, it might be that you aren't ovulating because of the hormone imbalance. I'm guessing, but that would be my thought on it.

I take supplements (vitamins D3, B12, fish oil, prenatal pills) and every 6 weeks if I need it to jump start my period, I take Prometrium. And trust me... you don't sound thick! I've been having a crash course on it (and a few other things) myself! :flower:

I'm also on 1500 and totally agree with the low carb diet in reducing symptoms. I'm also taking soy and have ovulated for the last 2 cycles (yay!). Starting my 3rd soy cycle today.

A quick tip .... Do your research on whether to continue taking metformin after you get your BFP. Some Drs reccomend to stop but research has shown that this can increase the MC rate.

Good luck ladies!!

I agree chattyb, if you are just taking met for pcos then you might not need to take it when your pg, whereas i have pcos and insulin resistence so i have to continue taking it throughtout my pg or they may change me to insulin

Hmmm... That's good to know. I haven't actually talked to my endo or OB about whether I continue using Met once I get pregnant. I'll have to remember that for my follow up endo meeting in Nov.

Hi :hi:

I've been prescibed Metformin today - because I have PCOS and 2 M/Cs this year. The doctors think my PCOS and higher levels of testosterone is what has caused my MCs. I have been told that I have to stay on the metformin until 12 weeks, if I get another :bfp:

xx

I hope it works for you and that you get your sticky bean!!

It's been about a month or so since I went to the full dosage now.

I just wanted to update this thread and let you know that I am now a Metformin mommy to be! I got my BFP confirmed last week! :) I'll be staying on Metformin throughout my pregnancy at the recommendation of my endocrinologist. :)
