DH and I arrived at the hospital on Wednesday 24th July at 8am for my scheduled c section. As first time parents we were both feeling really apprehensive about the arrival of our little bundles and DH was terrified about watching me have surgery.
Around 9:30am the surgical team came and spoke to us and explained the procedure and brought us down for my IV and spinal to be administered the local anaesthetic was a bit stingy going in and made me jump! DH was then asked to leave whilst I was prepped for surgery. They wheeled me into theatre and I couldn't believe the amount of people that were in there it was a whirlwind of activity (think this was because they needed double the people for twins) I was starting to get a little overwhelmed at this point but the team were lovely and kept me calm and the doctor then told me that she was going to insert the catheter. I have a real fear of this and asked her if she could wait until I couldn't feel it. The anaesthetist then came over and said he wanted to test if the spinal was working and ran an ice cube from my face down to the tops of my thighs. He keep asking if I could feel the cold.....once he got to my breast area I couldn't feel the cold but could still feel him touching my skin. I freaked when he said I was ready and I kept saying I'm not ready yet I can still feel you touching me. He assured me I was ready and that I hadn't noticed the catheter being inserted.
At this point the sheet had been placed over my chest area and I felt as if someone was running their finger along my pubic bone and the doctor told the nurse that the first incision had been made and if she could go and get my DH. He arrived a few minutes later and was as white as a sheet and he sat down to my left handside and held my hand. The doctor then announced that she had ruptured the first amniotic sac and to expect some pressure. Because Mia was breach she was wedged down in my pubic bone and it took alot of tugging to get her out I wish I would have known how forceful they would have to be. My DH was so shocked at how much I was being pulled back and forth and lay with his head in my hand telling me I was okay he said to me after that I had my eyes squeezed shut and was shouting oh my god I feel that and apparently they kept inserting something into my IV. Mia was born at 10:05 and was shown to me immediately but taken away for the next baby to be born and after a few more tugs and pulls Mason was born at 10:06.
At this point I was slightly out of it and hadn't noticed that my DH wasn't there and was told he had to be brought out after mason was born as they were concerned he was going to faint! I was so proud that he managed to stay throughout the whole thing and to witness the birth of his children he has a serious phobia of anything surgical and it was a huge hurdle for him.
About 15 minutes later and after I had been stitched back up I was told that Mia and Mason were with DH and that they were both perfectly healthy and had scored 9 on the apgar at both 1 and 5 mins. I was wheeled back to recovery and got to breast feed them both.
It was a very straight forward c section and I had no issues what so ever I actually look back and think positively about it. It was most definitely scary at the time but nothing like I had imagined and would do it again in a heart beat..... The recovery has went really well and got up and moving the next morning without to much hassle and have been getting better each day.
Sorry it was a bit long but here they are my gorgeous little miracle babes Mia Catherine 5lb 12oz and Mason Kai 6lb 3oz
