Here's my birth story from memory - haven't had much of a moment to write it up between a newborn and moving house!
At my 38 week appointment, my doctor informed me that I hadn't made any progress from last week. I was still 90% effaced and 1 cm. However, baby had moved so he was now back to back. My doctor told me there are ways to try and move him. He also told me of the things associated with his position. I spent the next few days trying out the positions the doctor told me as well as the things I found online.
At 38+2 weeks, I decided to have a 10 oz mug of prune juice. I was wanting to try all the labor inducing methods that I could. Instead, I just ended up on the toilet all night long! My mucus plug passed that night, which got me very excited. My sister later spoiled it by saying it doesn't mean much and that I could still go overdue, especially since this is my first. I went to bed and spent the next few days waiting it out.
At 38+3, I noticed baby wasn't moving much. He normally is very active, especially during the evenings. He was still moving somewhat, so I figured he was okay. At around 8 pm, I went to use the bathroom and felt a constant trickle coming out. I wasn't sure if it was urine or my waters, so I decided to lay down for an hour to see if anything changed. Nothing did, so DH and I decided to go to bed.
At 38+4, I woke up at around 4 am to use the bathroom. That's when I had the huge gush of fluid signaling my waters had gone. I nervously woke DH who just about had a heart attack. The fluid wouldn't stop coming out as we got ready to go - luckily we had just installed the car seat and got the hospital bags ready to go when I lost my plug earlier. We drove to the hospital - only five minutes away - and they admitted me.
They checked me to see if my waters really had went - easy to see as I was still spilling out all over the floor!
They decided to do an internal check to see how far dilated I was - I was still only 1 cm. The nurse went to have a chat with the on-call doctor while DH and I waited in the room. They wanted me to wait until 7 am to see if I progressed any - at this point I wasn't having any contractions, but usually they picked up after waters are gone.
We waited, having not had any sleep yet. At 8 am, they came back and started me on pitocin - something I had said I didn't want. I was nervous since everyone had previously told me it made labor far worse than it was without it. Every 30 minutes from then on, they increased the pitocin mu/min by one. The nurse was confident that I wouldn't need to go above 10 or so - they rarely had to, and almost no one needed the maximum of 20 to kickstart labor. I was having contractions almost on top of each other, but they weren't strong enough according to the nurse.
I ended up at 20 mu/min at around 2:30 pm. At 6 pm, the doctor came in to see me and did another check - I hadn't progressed at all. She wanted me to stay on max pit for 24 hours before she would let me have a section, since she said it was major surgery and I wouldn't want to go through that. I ended up in tears when the nurse came back in - it was the same nurse that had saw me when I went in for my preterm scare at 28 weeks. She apologized and asked if she could get me anything...except I wasn't allowed food or water, and hadn't been since I came in. I ended up asking for an epidural so I could sleep. The anesthegiologist came in and set me up with one. One side of my body remained more numb than the other, and stayed that way for most of the night, but I was grateful for the pain relief.
At 3 am, I woke up in excruciating pain. It felt like the epidural was doing nothing, and the baby's heart monitor was all over the place. The nurse came in and they found that the baby was in distress because my waters had gone so long ago. They inserted something into my uterus to give him fluid, which helped to stabilize his heart rate. The anesthegiologist came back in to fix my epidural, as by this point, I wanted to die from the pain. The contractions were on top of each other while on max pitocin. It was hard to breathe through them. I hadn't cried all night, but I couldn't hold back the tears anymore. DH was crying beside me, since he was worried about both us and our child.
They did another check at this point, and I had only dilated to 2 cm. They said they would do a final check at 7 am, and if I hadn't gotten to at least 5 cm, I'd get a c section at 9 am. I sighed and decided to wait it out as DH got some sleep. They came in again and the doctor decided to check me. I was still at 2 cm and it had now been 36 hours since my waters had gone. I hadn't had food, water, or sleep between the restrictions and the constant checking on me. The nurse said that I could have my c section at 9 am. My epidural was wearing off again, and the pain was getting pretty bad. I asked if I could have help for it, but they said to wait until the c section to get it.
My parents came in with some breakfast for poor DH, and they waited out the last hour with me until they came in to get me. The pain was horrible to breathe through by now, and I was starting to shake from the pain. I felt like throwing up, and I remember telling the doctors this over and over. They discussed giving either a spinal or continuing on with the epidural, and decided on the latter. As they started, I felt the first cut and yelled that I wasn't numb enough. The anesthegiologist added another pain medication in addition to my epidural, and they continued on. DH held my hand throughout, as I felt barely there during the process. I remember hearing Micah cry, unable to see him. I was able to manage a smile as DH told me had lots of hair.
At this point, I started to violently shake. My heart rate was all over the place and I felt like I was about to pass out multiple times. DH then brought Micah in to show me him. Both DH and I heard the doctors talking about uterine rupture as I struggled to stay awake. I could barely focus through the shaking but I felt so happy getting to see him. DH was told to leave after that.
I don't remember much afterwards. I remember being wheeled in to recovery and asking them if I could breastfeed. Micah latched perfectly and we had several hours to bond before they took him. DH had managed to record most of what I didn't get to see, which helped me cope with the c section I didn't want. I was upset that DH didn't get to cut the cord, another thing I had wanted in my birth.
Micah weighed 6 lbs 4 oz and measured 19 inches. We ended up staying in the hospital only 48 hours.
My birth didn't go at all how I wanted. I was later told I can only have c sections because my pelvis is too small to birth a baby and I didn't respond to the pitocin. Apparently the doctor on call had told several nurses and my regular OB that I had pushed for several hours before getting the c section? People kept mentioning that to me and I was confused by it. My regular OB checked on me the day after the c section and apologized for how it went down. He said he wouldn't have waited that long to get the baby out when things weren't progressing and my waters had been gone for over 24 hours.
Either way, I'm so in love with my beautiful baby boy. I couldn't ask for much more. I'm not so sure I'll have anymore now that I know all of them will have to be c sections...I had wanted a vaginal birth very much. I felt very depressed about that. But I'm happy my baby is doing well and is healthy. I couldn't ask for more than that!
