I don't have a middle name myself... I didn't give my son a middle name... Didn't really see the point in it. But now that I'm torn between two names for my daughter I feel like maybe I should give her a middle name and use both the names I like.

Whats the advantage of having a middle name?

I think it's mostly a way to get in a second name you also like. Some other reasons for a middle name:

1. Middle initials are used at work, school, etc. when two people have the same first and last name (or same first initial and last name)

2. Offers a different naming convention to be used. For example, my DD's name has my first initial, and her middle name starts with my DH's first initial. We'll do the opposite if we have a boy.

3. Three letters looks nicer on monogrammed items! :winkwink:

The only real advantage is to use 2 favorite names. I think most names flow better with a middle name, in regards to graduation announcements and such...the downfall is if you love 2 names and then get pregnant again and wish you had used the middle as a first (altho I know people who have a J. Edward and an Edward D.)
