Just a quick question - is the midwife you see throughout your pregnancy anyway involved in your labour/birth? I always assumed no, and you'd be seen by the hospital staff, but i've read in a few places that women were familiar with the midwife that is with them during labour.

I remember my midwife saying she was in hospital the once and i wondered if they were called out to a birth?

Please say this isn't the case.....:dohh:

Thanks :hugs:

My midwife said she'll prob see me in the hospital at my visit on Friday there and I was confused too! But I know she comes to visit once baby is born at home. Sorry, I'm no help! Lol. Xx

It really depends how your MW care is carried out. I'm looked after by community MW's so they wouldn't be in the hospital if I went to one.

I was familiar with 1 of the MW's in the BC I went to as the community MW's worked there but I knew none in the hospital.

Usually you will just get who ever happens to be on duty.

I have seen many different midwives throughout and they are different in the hospital too.

I think it depends where you are.
I see my MW for check ups and stuff, then she comes for home visits after the birth. So total strangers at the hospital for me!

Not keen on your MW then i take it?

I'd rather the devil I knew...but then again I'm really hoping that one of my MW's is on call when I go into labour for my Homebirth she's awesome and so pro my choice to HBAC I want her to be part of it.

Ive had the same community MW throughout my pregnancy but she wont be at the hospital I will have hospital MWs then, although amount of time Ive spent there this last month they are just as familiar lol

I see a community midwife who is accompanied by a final year midwifery student at a GP clinic. I agreed to be a case study for the student (who I like more than my MW to be honest) who is qualifying in September and has 10 births to oversee before then. I call my SMW when I am admitted to hospital and she then takes over the majority of my care throughout the whole of labour, as long as things remain relatively uncomplicated. S,o I will get one to one attention. This is not the norm in our local maternity unit so I am actually quite pleased about it. She is also very pro-waterbirth so am hoping she'll try and help me out with getting the one and only pool!

I just don't get on with my midwife at all, i've already had to put in a complaint about her. I wanted to change, but as it would mean me travelling to hospital (instead of docs surgery) to see a midwife, it just wasn't practical as i don't drive. Shes let me down alot over the past few weeks, and the last person i could ever want with me in my labour is her.

Exactly the same here! Down here I think you only see 'your' MW for the birth if you have a homebirth.

Not always - staff is usually divided into those working on neontal clinic, delivery ward and then community. Its a shame really if you have seen the one person all the way and then someone different on the big day

I think it depends on how your NHS trust works. Here I see each of the midwifes in a particular "team" and they work from the hospital that I will (hopefully) have my baby at. The idea is that throughout all my antenatal appointments I will meet each of the midwifes in the team so when I deliver I should at least have met the mw that will look after me as there is always at least one from each team on duty. Hope that makes sense!!!

Which trust do you fall under, I could try find out the info online for you if that is any help?
