Hello,

My wife is 20 weeks pregnant. She is currently on Medicaid and we live New Jersey. We would really like to have a midwife deliver our baby, preferably in Chilton or Valley hospital.

However, we can't seem to find a midwife that will accept our insurance. We would also much prefer to deliver in Chilton or Valley Hospitals. We are trying to avoid Hackensack because they seem to have a crazy high C-section rate.

Does anybody know of any midwives in the area that would accept Medicaid? Even better if they deliver at Chilton (our number one hospital pick). We are fine switching HMOs to accommodate the midwife, if that were necessary.

Thanks in advance.

I wish I had an answer for you, but I haven't actually looked for a midwife and I have different insurance than your wife. However, my top choice for delivery is actually Valley Hospital even though I live closer to Chilton. Valley is supposed to be absolutely amazing and they have an incredible birthing center. Plus I don't really trust Chilton from my own past experiences, but that's neither here nor there. So ultimately I switched doctors. My original doctor was affiliated with Chilton and even though I liked the doctor I just really wanted to deliver at Valley. I had no idea where to even start looking for someone decent so I ended up just calling the hospital and getting a list of names that they personally recommended. Then I called the offices and asked if they took my insurance. I ended up finding an AMAZING doctor that way. I am SO happy with him. I go to see him tomorrow actually and I can ask him about Valley Hospital midwives if you'd like. Let me know. And good luck in your search!! Btw, you're the first person I've seen on here from the area. Welcome!

Thank you! I'd really appreciate it if you asked your Dr. My wife has called the hospital and asked about Dr's that take Medicaid and it's VERY limited. Midwives they had no answer.

It looks like we're gonna be stuck going with a traditional Dr. That's okay, we just would have really preferred a midwife.

Would you mind telling me the name of your Dr.? I will look into him since my wife isn't too crazy about our current Dr.

As for hospitals, we are actually torn Between the two. We had a TERRIBLE emergency room experience at Chilton, but we read nothing but great things about the maternity ward. We were ready to write them off due to the ER but are considering them due to people's experience with labor and delivery.

Thanks for your help.

My bad experiences were in the ER as well when I had an ectopic pregnancy. They kept sending me hone with no answers for a month straight. I know a few people who have delivered there and it was great but after what I went through I just don't trust them for myself anymore. The doctor I am seeing is Dr. Marcus in Ridgewood. I'm not sure what other insurances he takes but if he takes your wife's he is excellent and I would highly recommend him. My first visit with him lasted an hour and 15 minutes. He was very thorough. And he does some of the ultrasounds himself right there in the office. I'll ask him today about midwives for you.

Thank you. I appreciate it.

Yes we had bad experiences when we lost our baby in January.

We swore them off and decided we would do valley, but there's so many positive reviews with their maternity ward that we are revisiting the idea.

It seems like the ER is basically a separate entity so I feel it's quite possible that they could be so different.

Ok, so I asked my doctor and he said there aren't really any midwives that take Medicaid. But that you can probably go through the Valley Clinic and they will take it. I know Chilton has an OB Clinic that takes Medicaid as well, but that's made up of the same OBGYNs that are on call in the ER. I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help as far as finding a midwife. Good luck with everything!! If you DO find a midwife let me know.

It was very kind of you to try. If we find something I will definitely let you know
