Hi, my dd is 13 months and we have finally been referred to a dietician and currently awaiting appointment, after trying to eliminate things myself and her being on lactose free milk and not eating anything with milk in she was still being sick after milk until i started to water it down, the doctor says this sounds more like milk protein than lactose as she reacts to soya too. So until i get her appointment in wondering what milk to try her with? Ive read rice milk not recommended for under 5's so that leaves oat milk? If anyone has any advice or experiences would appreciate it :) poor baby girl has suffered long enough xx

My daughter is 10 months and has cows milk protein allergy. You could try oat milk as you said, also coconut milk-koko seems to be a popular brand, and I've also been told about pea milk, though I've never come across it.

Just to note my daughter has other allergies and didn't react too well to oat or coconut milk, if it's just cows milk allergy you suspect those I mentioned above should be ok.

Good luck x

If your doctor suspects a milk protein allergy (versus intolerance) then really you should have a fairly quick referral to paediatric dieticians and to a community paediatrician. While you're waiting for that appointment to come through the GP should also start your LO on a prescribable alternative to formula/cow's milk. Alternatively you can give milk substitutes to your LO, but they in no way have enough calcium for tiny humans who are on a dairy-free diet so if you're going down that path then really your GP should get your LO on a calcium supplement while you're waiting for an appointment.

My LO was diagnosed with CMPA at 6 weeks old. She tried nutramigen and was then switched to neocate. She is allergic to soya as well. Neocate has enough calcium in it as long as babies drink over 500ml a day and that was ok until six months. From then onwards LO was put on calcium sandoz as well. She partially outgrew the CMPA by 12 months but is still very sensitive to soy.

Re milk alternatives: I used almond milk (sugar free) a lot in cooking. We have no nut allergies in the family though and I had gotten the pediatrician's ok to try almond milk with LO. Coconut milk and oat milk are also ok options for a dairy free diet. Rice milk oddly has a bit of arsenic in it which is why it's not recommended for young children. :)

I saw the NHS dietician the other day as my LO has CMPI. They recommend soya or oat milk as alternatives. I asked them if I could give goat's milk but I was told they don't recommend that (although the dietician was unable to tell me why). I read on a website that if they react with cow's milk then they are likely to react to goat's milk too so perhaps that is why. I know some people try the coconut milk (koko brand) and almond milk. I think rice milk is not recommended due to it having arsenic(??) in (according to google). If your LO cannot have soya then a good source of calcium can come from 'wot no dairy' yoghurts which you can order from Amazon or I heard some people say they are available in Holland & Barrett. Also there is a great group if you belong to Facebook which you can find with the following link:-

There are loads of people on there going through the same thing who offer support and give tips etc. Hope that helps.
