Minimum dosage of Metformin to be effective?

Any PCOS and insulin resistant women?

I´m currently on 1,500mg of Metformin. However, due to constant headaches and migraines, GP and gynae advised me to decrease dosage to 1,000mg because they said the side effects are too severe.

I read in many websites that minimum dosage of Met. to be effective is 1,500mg, that´s why I´m unwilling to decrease dosage....BUT the side effects are killing me....esp when I take the 1,000mg at night......

Any advice there??? Perhaps people with positive OPKs who took Metformin? What dosage were you on?

i have just been prescribed it and they are starting me on 500mg going up to 1000mg after a week. i am not sure about the best dosage really, depends on how resistant you are i suppose!

Thanks! I´ve only heard stories of women getting pg with 1,500mg of Metformin and more....But so far, I haven´t heard any PG stories at a lower dosage...

Do u have insulin resistance too?

I think it can be effective at any dose tbh - it's a question of just finding the right one. Frankly I am surprised they didn't start you at the lower dose and work you up - the side effects are easier if you increase gently rather than starting on 1500mg a day - that is quite a jump!

i am not sure whether i am insulin resistant yet, my doc is presuming so but i havent had tests to confirm it.
its best to start on a low dose and work up, the pharmacist and doc said your symptoms are less harsh like this. at the moment i have chronic wind

hiya i have just started metformin but i dont have pcos but i have very irregular periods and im awaiting fertility test results i dont have headaches but i do feel tired and its more running to the loo im getting from it xxx

I too did the slow increase in the meds. Started one 500mg pill a day for week then to two a day for a week then to 3 a day which is where i am at. When i first started i was taking them at different times of the day until i switched docs and she explained that i needed to take them all at night before bed. I did get preggy at only 1000mg but had a MMC at 8 weeks in feb this year. Still waiting to try again in May. Hope that helps

Hey! I noticed you said "was". When did you stop Metformin and why??? How were your side effects. Doc wants me to get to the dosage that you had, but I think I can´t....body can´t take it.

I found out i had PCOS in early 2003 and then got preggy in oct 2003 after one cycle of clomid (sp) i am trying the metformin again but struggling with the side effects at 1500mg again. I am going back to 1000 to see if i can cope better. I had gotten preggy in Dec 09 on just 1000mg again but had a mmc in Feb 2010. Although I did not know to take it through my 1st trimester and we are not sure if that had anything to do with it. I will be ttc again in April.

id been on met for 2yrs fell preg augs 09 but mc 7weeks then put bck on came off jan 10 to start ivf treatment didnt have many side effects just hot flushes
