just wondered if anyone has any complication experience?

I had my mirena put in about 2 years ago and it wasent as painful as i thought the fit would be, 24 hours of painkillers and some light spotting for a few days and all was great I was very pleased with it.
I started having regular periods again a year later, didnt actually think anything of it as I thought periods with an IUD was pot luck - some ladies stop and some dont.

The last few months I have had my normal period for 3-5 days (week 1) and then a really heavy bleed for a week after (week 3) I thought I should go get it checked out. Anyway, busy mum of 4 pushed it to the back of the pile. Just before christmas I was having a tidy up & pulled out the mirena info booklet they give you when fitted. I remember reading that if you have any irregular bleeds, fever, pelvic pain or discharge you should seek medical advice straight away.

Well this weekend I have been really poorly, so so tired, feverish and then pelvic pain that was like bad throbbing and then (sorry tmi) a slightly watery discharge.
I went straight up to see gp this morning and she said I properly had a 'cold virus' but i told her my IUD concerns and she said that she would do my smear whilst I was there and have a check of my strings. I told her everything inc the bleeding and she said I should not be having periods with the mirena but didn't seem concerned.
So after the smear she says, ''ok so I couldnt find your strings and I will send off for a scan date for you. Heres a bag of condoms to cheer your husband up :nope: and you should properly do a preg test too, come back and see me if you are'' (at this point shes passing me my coat and Im like ''woooaahhh hang on a minute'') if u cant see my strings do you think the symptoms im having are related to this and that my coil has gone AWOL and poss causing infection!? She told me that it was highly unlikely as was very rare to have mirena complications and that it prob just ''fell out'' or is still there in place and nothing to worry about as they have instruments to retrieve it
BTW This dr does not have a good reputation in the small village I live in - but shes the only female one and I had choice of her or the 70yr old male :dohh:

The pelvic pain is still there but not feeling so feverish tonight, am i being super parinoid and should i just wait patiently for the scan date

I would get checked hun the scan could be a while off :flow: I hope everything's ok x

I don't know about the fever but my periods have gradually been getting heavier over the past 8 months. I've had the coil for 3 years. My periods are now heavy and last for up to 10 days! I saw my GP who wouldn't remove it in case the bleeding was being caused by a fibroid and I still haven't had my scan date after seeing her in october! I'd really push your concerns hun.

How awful, what about booking an appointment with your local family planning clinic? I was advised by gp to get a mirena coil fitted due to bad pmt. It proved difficult to get an appointment to have it done, so I phoned family planning clinic. The consultant was amazing, spent ages explaining everything, in particular how the mirena worked. I learnt from this it could actually make it worse and that along with other reasons meant I didnt have it done. He was saying how many women have it fitted at gps, then gp won't remove it, so they end up there for it removing. Hopefully they'll be able to help and advise you.

Hope you get it sorted x

If i were you i'd be ringing the out of hours doctor or nhs direct to try and get seen. It may well just be a cold but like you say it could be the coil causing an infection and if thats the case you want it retrieved sooner rather than later.

Thanks for ur replies so thought I would update....

After a week (which turned out to be nearly 2!) of heavy bleeding since the first dr app I Went back to see my dr (a diff one) who said that he was going to send me for an emergency scan app - date would come through in a matter of days not weeks (and it did)
He also gave me some antibiotics to ease the pains as he said he thought my personal diagnosis about it being stuck sounded highly likely and if it was causing infection then the AB would help me feel better until the scan.

So back from scan today and everything exactly as I predicted... It's gone AWOL :(
She said she could only see it from a abdominal scan and couldn't on the internal but she said it's defiantly in there however it has perforated my uterine wall and is going to almost certainly need surgery to remove.

I have to wait for the gp to receive the scan results and then he can discuss the next stage and refer me for removal.
Relieved I'm not going crazy and glad it's going to be sorted out but also anxious!

Holy cow! How long are you going to have to wait? That sounds quite serious...good luck, I hope it gets resolved quickly!

Wow, I'm glad you have an answer but gutted it's so serious with surgery required. I called my dr on monday as I still hadn't had my scan date after seeing her in october and she hadn't even referred me! So I have an emergency scan tomorrow and am slightly worried. I just want the damn thing out!
Keep us updated hun x

Hopefully wont have to wait long! ... The GP called yesterday to say she had received my report - apparently its perforated my uterus towards my bowel :dohh: and shes put an urgent referral through to see a gynecologist so more waiting from the hospital now for a appointment date! Not sure how soon the app will be either - surely they wont keep me waiting too long  DR was highly concerned said that she had never ''in all her 30yrs'' had one of her patients had a perforated uterus....

Laurajo24 how did your emergency scan go!? Cannot believe the first referral didnt go through! Good job you chased them up & Hope now they have shed some light on the coil and possible fibroid :hugs:

Gosh, really hope they don't keep you waiting too long. My scan was fine.bit tender around my cervix when she did the internal but all ok to remove.had it taken out this morning. It was difficult for her to get it out and she said it may have been slightly embedded. I'm not going to lie, it was agony getting it out, like I could feel her tugging and it felt like contractions at one point! It's not normally like that for most women though, in case I scare anybody. Slight bleeding this afternoon but no more pain or cramps.so glad it's gone! x
