I just had the mirena placed today and I was wondering how it takes before it becomes affective? How long until I dont need to use protection anymore? Dh and I hate using it! I was told to come back in 5weeks to get the iud checked and make sure it stays in place. I have no restrictions and told to use protection until then. I'm fully breastfeeding as well and haven't had a period yet. Like I said we hate using condoms and can't wait to not have to. Which is also why we chose mirena.

But did you have your period before insertion?

I have the copper coil and was told to use condoms for 7 days. I bled for 2 weeks anyway so that was protection for us! Lol x

I heard that with the copper iud. Just didn't know if it was the same for Mirena. We're gona wait a week but after that I dnt think we can no more lol

No I didn't. I got my period in the middle of November. I bled most of October after I had it implanted

My doctor told me to wait 48 hours to dtd without protection. I had it inserted about 10 days after the beginning of my cycle.

I'm wondering if I was told that because it was inserted before Ive had a cycle and yours was after?

I had it implanted in October before I had a period, got my period the month after it was in. Sorry if that was confusing!

It is effective immediately but my lady doctor said not to place anything in the vagina for 5-7 days because you risk a uterine infection due to the cervix being slightly open from insertion

My was inserted on day 5 of my period so we knew I wasn't pregnant and highly unlikely for that to happen. I think if you go any other time (mid cycle) then it could be different as far as how long to wait before unprotected sex goes
