I got a phone call this afternoon from the hospital as they wanted to discuss the tests results from my miscarriage after the D & C (had it done on 28th Dec). They've told me I had something called a molar pregnancy which I've never heard of before. I am not allowed to try again for at least 6 months and have to have blood tests every two weeks until then. I felt like I was coping ok with the miscarriage but now being told i can't try again I am kind of in pieces. I've looked it up on the internet but I don't really understand what it means, I have felt unwell since the miscarriage (feeling like I'm going to faint and feeling sick) but I put that down to general being run down now I don't know if it's related. I'm so confused and scared I don't know whats going on. Sorry to go on

Has any one had this or know anything about it?

There are two types of molar pregnancies... Complete and Partial.

A complete molar pregnancy is when a sperm fertilizes an 'empty' egg. In other words, an egg that has no/or inactive nucleus. The sperm ends up making up the missing information through duplication and the pregnancy proceeds as normal minus a baby. There is placenta, sac, HCG hormone etc. but there was never a baby.

A partial molar pregnancy is when two sperm fertilize one egg, as the pregnancy develops (unless it progresses into healthy twins) there are generally partial 'parts' of the pregnancy that are developed. IOW partial placentas, partial sacs. If a baby does develop it generally has a lot of genetic problems.

Most often the cells in these pregnancies develop in grape-like clusters and can be pretty easily detected via ultrasound.

Because of the nature of the pregnancy, your hormone levels will need to be checked every two weeks until you have NO HCG for a period of at least three weeks. Then they continue to check your hormone levels beyond that (to the 6 months) to make sure there is no residual tissue left that is mimicking pregnancy.

I'm so sorry for your loss, and I hope this info was helpful.

:hugs:

sorry for ur loss and this set back my aunt had a partial molar pregnancy and went on to have to healthy children so hang in there xxxx

my friend had one of these about 5 years ago. she also had to have test its just to make sure your hormones return to normal. plus side of her story is she has since had 2 healthy pregnancy. i no 6 months seems a long time to try again. but its for your health, :hugs: sorry for your loss honey.:hugs:

Thank you for your replies. Sorry for rambling on before it's just that I had just been told and just felt like going arrrhhhhhh. I know 6 months isn't long just feels like it at the moment. Although I knew I might not get pregnant straight away it just made me feel better knowing that I could at least try. I still don't really understand hopefully when I see the Dr they can explain it more and answer some of my questions which keep popping into my head. Thank you

I'm sure they will be able to answer all your questions hon. If it helps, you might write down the questions you have and take it with you.

A molar pregnancy is different than another type of pregnancy in that what made it go wrong to begin with can affect you several months later if your body doesn't completely return to non-pregnant state.

The doctors want to make sure your body "knows" it's not pregnant before allowing you to try to become pregnant again.

:hugs:

I am sorry for your news it must feel like a setback when you wanted to try and conceive again. I suppose its important that the issue has been identified and you can get the proper medical attention to get yourself back on track for the next time.

I also have been advised to leave ttc for another 4-6 months (after my miscarriage 13 days ago)because of a complicated ovarian cyst which will require an operation. I know it feels like a long time but I'm trying to think of it as getting my body back to the optimum condition before hopefully having a healthy pregnancy next time round.

Good luck at the hospital and I hope you get a satisfactory explaination from the doctor about Molar pregnancy - keep us posted on your developments.xx

My friend has recently been told she has had a molar pregnancy - I came accross this website that may help https://www.molarpregnancy.co.uk/

Thank you again for all your replies and for being so lovely.
I'm seeing the consultant next Tuesday. I'm trying to think positively and hopefully I'll full into the group of women where everything returns back to normal pretty much straight away so I can TTC again by July. I have found out that I had a partial molar pregnancy (which makes sense as we saw a heartbeat at 8wks) so the chances of it turning nasty (needing chemotherpy) is low around 5%. I feel more positive this week.
