She has just had a 5oz bottle, an hour and a half ago she had a 5oz bottle, she had 41oz yesterday. I am guessing she is about 9lb now but she is just eating so much, any ideas why?

Could it be that she just likes to suck? How is she with a pacifier? I know that common advice with a breastfed baby is that the baby will self-regulate. I'm pretty sure I've heard that you can in fact over-feed a formula fed baby. I have no idea how to know how much to feed a formula fed baby.

She has a dummy too, but she is 100% hungry, she does all the cues and spits her dummy out.

If she is really hungry then I'd guess she likely needs it. Could it be a growth spurt? I'm really not sure how it works with formula fed babies.. Sorry I can't help more!

If she's hungry, I'd feed her... again, I have no experience or knowledge about formula though...

My little one was the same at that age, it turns out it was actually a sore tummy and she was mistaking pain with hunger. She used to drink 11oz in one sitting (over maybe an hour) at three weeks.

A friend of mines used hungry baby formula. Maybe give that a try? We saw a paediatrician who told me not to give her more than 5oz every three hours (or something like that) and not to go more than a few oz over the recommended daily amount for her weight as it can cause major discomfort and digestive issues.

Thankyou for your reply's ladies, Ive been writing down for a few days what lo has been eating and last night she had two bottles really close together but then slept from 10.00 - 3.30am so as she has dropped a bottle there she may have been making up for it in the evening? She had seven bottles yesterday all varying between 3-5oz's. I feel like she is eating alot but with my other dd we had a routine and with lo we let her eat whenever she wants? I an seeing the hv next thur so will be interested to see how much weight she has put on. I just dont remember dd eating this much!!

My wee one also slept through really early so I do think that has a lot to do with it!

Zach was like this, but he had silent relfex and I had no idea. Is she happy when she's fed, if she is she is probably just hungry, with Zach though he would drink so much he got belly ache, he wasn't actually hungry, just trying to calm the burn in his throat.

Unless she's vomiting it all up after, it sounds like she's doing great. There really is no such thing as feeding them too much at this age. If she's not being sick after and she's happy to drink that much, just keep going. She knows what she needs.

Thanks all 😃 she isn't sick after she eats and seems content and happy enough after she has eaten. I had forgot how having a newborn makes you second guess everything you are doing! I do just think she is a little chunky monkey!!

Ff is the same as bf. Feed on cue :) if she's wanting the feed and not being sick/
Acting sore during/afterwards then she's just a hungry little girl.

All of my children have still been on 2-3 hourly feeds at that age ranging from 2 upto 4oz. Try not overthink it too much as their feeding schedule changes so so much over the first year with all the development leaps/ growth spurts etc.

As long as she's happy, healthy and gaining weight then she's all good xxx

I agree with the others just go with baby's cues :)

Thanks lovely ladies, ive been panicking all day, she had 46ozs yesterday and i just feel like that is loads?! She is only nineteen days!!

:hugs:

Must just be hungry! Sounds like she's doing great though, all babies are different. They don't half confuse the brain sometimes xxx

Ive fed both breast and formula and would normally say feed on cue but honestly 46oz for a newborn is a massive amount. Personally I'd talk to your doctor in case it's an issue with blood sugars making baby feel thirsty /hungry. I'd also offer a dummy in case you've just got a sucky baby.

My first seemed to want to feed all the time until I realised he just wanted to comfort suck.

I totally agree that 46ozs is sooo much 😞 she has a dummy already and had had one since day one. Ive been to the doctors today and they think she may have reflux?

I would second it may be a slight reflux. My breastfed baby drinks loads too and gains rapidly. He nurses when he has acid coming up to soothe the burn every 1 1/2 hrs.

I was going to say 46oz of milk for a 19 day old baby is loads..
my little man is 10months old now but when he was 3-4 months old he was admitted into hospital (at the time we didn't know what was wrong with him) it turned out he was having stomach spasms due to me feeding when i thought he was hungry :(
The doctors said i was over feeding him and needed to stop and he was only getting maybe 25-28 ozs of milk a day if even.. x

Thanks Mandy, her eating seems to have stabilised the past few days and although I think she is eating alot still she is in a bit more of a routine. The thing is I'm sure she is hungry, all the cues are there and we try everything before we feed her. When I spoke to the doc on thur she said you cant overfeed a baby and not to get caught up in how much she was having...... So confusing!!
