Well the pregnancy is done and the new world has begun...
Riley Scott was born on Monday May 11th @ 5:55 pm via emergency C-Section - 7lbs1ounce - 20 1/2" long ... Here is our birth story.
As many of you already know, I started having early labour symptoms on Tuesday May 5th. They continued to show throughout the week. On Monday May 11th at 2am, I was awoken by a very strong contraction. I got up and began to time them and they were coming at intervals of 8-10 minutes apart. But still had no membrane breakage or bloody show yet. At 6am I went to the bathroom and attempted to stop the flow of my urine and could not, so I was 100% sure that my membrane had broke. I called the hospital and told them the stats and they said to have something to eat, relax and wait until the contractions were 5-6 minutes apart as they were still 7-8 minutes apart. At 10:30am I went to the bathroom and my bloody show began to appear, but it was bright red. I rang the hospital again and they told me to make my way in to be assessed. Called hubby at work, and he was home within minutes, showered and ready to go.
As we were heading down to the car (we live in an apartment) I decided I wanted to kiss the pavement. Down I went on my knee. Scuffed it up pretty bad. We finally got in the car and made our way to the hospital.
By 11:30am we were at the hospital, I told the front desk I was in labour. The front desk took my information and then took me to a room. Once I was undressed and in the bed, a young nurse came to ask the usual screening questions. How far were the contractions and when did they start, did I have my bloody show, did my water break etc...
Next came my two care nurses. They were absolute angels. They were not sure what was going to happen because my contractions were so far apart, so I had to wait for the doctor. She came in about an hour later and asked me a couple of things then proceeded to exam me. She first did the stick test to see if my water had broken. She smiled and said that yes I did in fact have a water breakage. Then the shock of it all came. I was already 5cm dilated. She then broke the rest of my water and let me tell you, I felt like I was sitting in a bathtub there was so much of it. It just kept coming and coming. It was actually rather funny cause the poor nurse had to keep changing the bedding. So I was declared a "keeper" at 2pm.
The contractions began to come stronger and closer together. They were 5-6 minutes apart at this point. Once I found out I was already 5cm dilated, I asked for my epidural. I was not going to take the chance of missing out on it. The epidural was not in the least bit painful as many have told me it was. I even had to have the nurse turn the dosage down from 15mg (maximum) to 10mg (minimum) cause I felt really stoned. Well then the trouble began. My contractions started to space apart again at 10-12 minutes apart. The doctor then said that if in an hour the contractions don't come in earnest, to add postsum to my IV. Well they didn't get closer, they got further apart at 13-15 minutes apart. So the postosum was added.
Then Riley's heart rate started to act really wierd. It would climb up to the 150bpm then fall down to 50bpm. They thought it might have been the monitor on my stomach, so they stopped that one and put one up inside my uterus and directly onto Riley's head. My husband and my mom had gone across the street to get something to eat, of which I had no problem with. And the doctor said it would be a couple more hours yet. I dosed on and off, but woke when I heard the nurse and doctor.
Well, it was not the monitor, it was Riley. He was in distress. The nurse examed me and I was 7cm dialated, but Riley was still rather far up in the birth cannel. They were keeping a very close eye on Riley and his heart rate. The next thing I knew, my two nurses were asking me to roll over onto my left side to see if that helped Riley out. It didn't, so back to my back I went. Then to my right I went. Suddenly 2 more nurses came in. They were having me flip over to my left to my right suddenly that I was starting to get scared. Then another 2 nurses came in. I was being flipped like a pancake at this point. One nurse gave me the oxygen max. Another nurse had her hand up my vagina trying to tickle Riley to see if that stirred him. The doctor came back to exam me. I was 8cm dialated, but Riley was still way too far up the cannel. And his heart rate was getting worse as each moment went by. The doctor ordered the potosum to be stopped and the nurse said it had already been shut off for the last 10 minutes. The doctor then looked at me and said "honey, we have to take you down to the OR for an emergency C-section. the baby is not happy". I started to cry and said that someone had to call my husband. I gave the nurse his cell phone number and my husband and mom were back in the room within 2 minutes. They were informed that I was being taken to the OR for an emergency C-section and my mom started to cry and my hubby looked so scarred.
I was in the OR within 10 minutes and strapped down with so much activity going on around me that I continued to be scarred and was crying. Finally my hubby as guided into the room to sit behind the curtain with me. Within minutes, the doctor stated that Riley's head was too big to fit down my pelvic area and his head is NOT that big. My Pelvic area is just too small for vaginal births. Then she said, no wonder he was in distress, the embilico cord was wrapped twice around his neck.
If you remember, at our 3D ultrasound, I saw the cord was wrapped lightly around him. I had the doctor give me another ultrasound at 34 weeks and the cord was NOT around his neck. I had an ultrasound at 37 weeks and nothing was reported about the embilico cord. So within a 2 week span, Riley had twisted enough to wrap the cord around his neck twice.
I turned to my hubby and said, I need to hear the cry, I have to hear the baby cry. Within seconds... THE BLISSFULLY SWEET SOUND erupted. Over the sweet sound the doctor said "We have a beautiful little boy". My hubby was so concentrated on me he didn't hear it. When they brought him around the curtain my hubby immediately looked at the genital area.
We were so relieved when we heard he was healthy and happy. That his heart was okay. That there were no ill effects of the trauma. I am so glad that the doctor on call was a "no screw around" doctor. I hate to think of what would have happened if it was a different doctor with different views.
He is a beautiful little boy... And hubby and I love him to death.
That is our birth story...
