Hi i had my baby on saturday at 29+3 days, and today she has sneezed about 4-5 times, 1 of the moms is ill bt she hasnt been coming in! Has anyone elses baby had a cold whilst being in the nicu? And do uno if it affects them badly or can there immune system fight it xxx

Didn't want to read and run hun, my little brother was born at 32 weeks and I presume he sneezed while in ICU, hope she is ok hun xx

sneezing in newborns is really common hun :) its just a reflex. Don't worry X

Bless you my sweet - I feared colds too when my daughter was in hospital. Newborns sneeze frequently because they are clearing their nasal passages of all the gunk acquired from being born. It is highly unlikely this mother would have passed it on unless she was actually handling your baby with unwashed hands. Try not to worry x

Thanks for replying every one, lizzie the midwife said that too, im worrying about every littl e thing :( xx

My Son got a cold during his stuyvesant in the NICU. The nurse said that it was perfectly normal and good for babies to get their first colds in a controlled environment. Congrats in your baby girl!

It is so difficult not to worry isn't it. But remember she is in the best place and if she does get a wee infection, she'll get what she needs to fight it off.

Abby sneezed a fair bit, she was really snuffly - and still is from time to time. I loved the first time she did it, she looked so shocked.

ye she said that too me aswel- so maybe it can be a gd fing, :) xxx

The air also tends to be drier in hospital. I can be fine at home and go into work and start getting sniffly.

hey there, I counted this as a milestone!!

She still sneezes away now, but think it's always been more to do with the NG tube irritating her than anything else.

It's very cute, hope your baby's doing just fine xx

Good, normally all premmies do sneeze and is a good symptom that the lungs are functioning well. My LO coughs and sneezes sometimes by reflex (when on ventilator, not to get the air way dry the oxygen is often humidified and normally water droplets are formed all along the walls of the pipes. sometime these water droplet enters along with the oxygen to wind pipe and hence triggers the sneeze) and doctors find it encouraging.

When Justus was in the NICU she sneezed an awful lot, however she had her own NICU room so the only people in there with her were the nurses doctors and us family. The nurse said that most preemies can't cough right away so they use the sneezing for the same concept to clear their nasal cavity and throat!! But I think its the cutest thing when they sneeze I absolutely loved it!! If my preemie were to get a cold I would much rather it be in the NICU or hospital as there is no better place to be sick so that they are taken care of 24/7!!!
