It was the day before Amelia was due, 17th July. It was 13.30 and I was laying in bed with OH and both our hands were on my bump. Suddenly, we both felt it go rock hard, tighten, and then go back to normal. 'That was a contraction, I know that was a contraction' I jumped out of bed and went and got my birthing ball. The next 2 hours I spent bouncing on the ball, feeling my belly get tight and then back to normal. They didn't hurt in the slightest but I knew I was in labour.
Me and OH took a walk into town, had some lunch and went back home to get some rest. They were regular. Every 5 minutes but only lasted 30 secs. Then at 7pm they started to get painful.
I rang the midwife and explained that I was contracting but as they were still far apart and not lasting long- they told me to stay at home.
An hour later, the contractions were still the same but I was getting so much pressure. I knew that I wasn't meant to be feeling pressure yet! I rang maternity ward and they said the same but I knew something wasn't right and asked if I could come and get checked out. We got to the hospital at 8.30pm and they weren't really interested in me. They didn't examine me, or put me on the machine that measures your contractions. The midwife just put her hand on my belly and felt the contraction. 'They don't feel strong- go for a walk'.
I walked from one end of the hospital to the other and then the pains got real intense. Still 5 mins apart. Still only lasting 30 secs.
I went back to maternity ward and she agreed to examine me. I was 4cm and my waters were bulging!! 'Go for another walk and hopefully your waters will go'. I walked out of the ward and then 'pop' my waters went!!! I looked down and they were green. I immediately started to panic. I didn't know why they were green but I knew that it wasn't a good thing!
All the midwifes rushed over and off I went to the delivery suite. 'The baby has pooped inside you and you now need to be monitored throughout your labour' the midwife explained. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get in the birthing pool :-(
She examined me and I was now 7cm. As she left the room to get a delivery pack ready for us, I got the urge to push. My OH called her back in and she could see the top of Amelia's head. I couldn't believe I went from 4cms, to 7cm, to fully dialated in about half an hour!
With 7 pushes, her head was out. I could see her lovely dark hair! The midwife slipped over her cord which was around her neck and then my last contraction came in and out pop our little lady. She laid on my belly. Purple. I was rubbing her back. 'Come on Amelia! Breathe. Cry. Please.' Then 2 doctors rushed in, took her from me and placed her on another bed to recussitate her. It was only for 2 minutes but it was the longest 2 minutes of my life. We finally heard a little sigh and she was pink again! Our little girl had made it!!
She weighed 7lb 13oz and was so beautiful!!!
She latched onto my breast immediately and we had a half hour feed! I was so pleased!!
She has completed our family and I am so in love
