I am so proud to announce the safe and healthy arrival of my gorgeous son Oakley Thomas born 1.2.12 @ 10.24am weighing 8lb 110z :cloud9:

So what a birth story I have to share with you all!

Monday 30th Jan in the morning (40wks+ 6) I went to hospital and had my sweep and was already 1cm dialated. After having my bp checked a few times they decided they wanted to induce me the following day, by the way this is the only time I've had any problems with my bp throughout my pregnancy. So went home Monday and was told to ring back tues 31st at 8am to find out time of induction, the same morning I also had my bloody show. After ringing all day and been told there was still no space for me on labour ward I was told at 3pm to go in anyway as they wanted to monitor my bp. So back to hospital with my bags just incase, bp was still slightly higher than normal for me but had decreased to what was showing the previous day. By 6pm we were told I may aswell stay in as time was getting on but they wouldnt be inducing me until the following morning  Throughout the day I had been having contractions starting 10mins apart but not regular then 3-4 mins apart again not regular.

So was admitted to the ward and shown my own room where I would be staying and induction to take place the following morning. OH wasnt allowed to stay so I sent him home about 11pm as nothing was happening. At about 12.30am Wednesday (1.2.12) I woke with contractions about 5 mins apart and getting more frequent lasting about 30secs. Went to the loo and lost more bloody show so went down to the mw office to let them know what was happening. Was told to have a bath etc which I did which helped loads but as soon as I got out the contractions wre much closer and longer. Decided to ring oh as I knew things were happening for real  He got to the hospital straight away to find me pacing the room in just my pants :haha: I dont think he realised how far along things were happening. MW came in shortly after and examined me, this was now 3.30am and I was 4cm. Time to go to labour ward she suggested :happydance: I was so happy even though I was coping I was glad to be able to use gas and air and it be available when I needed it. My mw asked about a water birth but the dr wouldnt allow because they wanted to monitor my bp but I really didnt mind.

So fast forward another 4 hours where I was examined again, I used the gas and straight away once on labour ward and it was brilliant pain relief, my waters were still intact aswell, anyway examined at 7.30am and I was 8cm!!! I couldnt believe how well things were going, and oh was brilliant so supportive and encouraging and didnt leave my side. Started feeling the urge to push and kept shouting I need a poo!!! So lent over the back of the bed and mw told me to just go with it, got examined again and I was fully dialted, then felt a trickle and my waters went.

I think by this time it was about 9.30am when I started to push, I strgled knowing when to push and was exhausted, and then when I pushed at the right time I had no energy left in me. Baby's heartbeat was taking a while to raise after each contraction so they decided to do ventouse and I carried on with gas and air for pain relief (sorry about spelling) delivery to help me out. Abit scary as the room seemed to fill with drs in seconds.

So 2 more pushes I managed to deliver my baby boy at 10.24am. It was the most amazing feeling ever and I could cry my eyes out just thinking about it :cloud9:

Oakley let out a huge cry as he was placed straight onto my chest for skin to skin and dad cut the cord. I remember saying he looks like me and telling him how much I loved him  I had to have the injection in my leg and placenta was delivered straight away. I was then told that I had suffered a 3rd degree tear and would be taken to theatre to be stitched up under general anasthetic. However my blood was ok so it would be a case of waiting to be taken down. Within the hour I began to feel much more pain and kept telling the mw that I was bleeding, she checked but said everything looked ok and not to worry. By this point I was really upset as didnt have the strength to hold Oakley and was in so much pain. Anyway a few minutes later I felt a massive pop down below and a gush of blood. I screamed at oh to get the dr and within minutes the room was filled again and I was being rushed down to theatre leaving oh and my baby boy behind. I shouted to oh to stay with Oakley and keep talking to him

We were told I would only be 30 minutes so you can imagine the distress when I returned from theatre nearly 3 hours later. Thankfully the dr had been going back and forth to oh to keep him updated. It turned out that not only had I suffered a 3rd degree tear from pushing but also a blood vessell near my urethra had burst, I lost 3 litres of blood and had 3 blood transfusions, at 1 point things did get out of control but thankfuly they managed to recover

It was the most terrifying experience of my life, at one point there must have been iver 20 drs in the theatre coming and going, I had drips coming out of rmy body everywhere for the blood transfusions etc. I just couldnt believe after a perfect pregnancy and even going into labour so perfectly and managing so well throughout ( I didn't even see the ventouse as a bad thing really) that things would turn so horribly wrong. I remember just laying there thinking how we had ttc for all this time, gone through everything and I was terrified I might not get to be a mum afterall

I was taken straight to recovery where oh and Oakley were brought to me straight away and we just hugged each other and burst into tears. Realising that I could have nearly lost them terrifies me still and I didnt realise how much you can actually love someone.

Anyway I spent the night on the high dependancy unit and recovered well, the following morning managed to have a shower and even go to the toilet properly both ends  The drs came to speak to me to explain everything and were happy for me to go onto the 'normal' postnatal ward as I was doing great.

The following day we were discharged and I couldnt believe I only had to spend 2 nights in hospital So we spent our first night at home Friday 3rd feb, communtiy mw came to visit the following morning only to be told we had to go back to hospital because Oakley was looking jaundice and also he had loST 13% of his birth weight and they only allow for 10%. So were dissapointed as you can imagine but obvs the best place to go. We spent another night in hospital, this time oh was allowed to stay because of the jaundice Oakley had to have treatment, but thankfully that all cleared up and we came home Sunday 5th Feb. Oakley lost more weight than normal because I was breastfeeding him and nobody bothered to tell us because of me having 3 blood transfusions this would effect my iron so he didnt get as much out of the chlolostrum.

My actual labour and delivery was perfect even after having ventouse delivery, as scary as my after birth experience was I'm just so happy to be recovering well with no pain. Most importantly Oakley is just amazing and so settled and I cant believe he is 2 weeks old tomorow :cloud9:

Congratulations to you all, and I'm happy everything turned out good in the end! He's very handsome!

So pleased it all turned out for you. Oakley is gorgeous. Enjoy him. X

Congratulations!! He's beautiful! I'm so glad you and your little boy are okay, must have been very scary though.

Exactly the same thing happened to me. I had a blood vessel cut by someone and ended up losing 4 litres of blood and needing 5 transfusions. Bea also had to go back in due to weight loss, she didn't have jaundice but an infection in her cord which wasn't picked up so spent 3 nights in hosp xx
