So as promised here is the story.

I went into hospital on Monday night (16th April 37 weeks 4 days) so that I could go onto steroid injections to prepare the babies lungs for coming early and also to monitor my blood sugars via an Insulin drip overnight. I didn’t get any sleep as they woke me up every 2 hours to check my sugar levels which were rather annoying. The section day Tuesday I was supposed to be taken down first so around about 8am, I didn’t end up in theatre until 5pm as there were emergency ladies who needed to be dealt with first so I was on edge all day as you would expect.

I finally got taken down and just as the spinal was being prepared a doctor came rushing in and said im really sorry we have an emergency you need to go back to your room and wait. So I went back to my room and within two minutes they came back and said all was ok so let’s go again lol.
So back in theatre I was told to lean forward onto a pillow and I would be given a small local to numb the skin around the site the spinal would be put in and then he would go ahead with the spinal, which I was warned would take about 20 minutes. Literally the local took 1 minute and the spinal took 2 minutes as he had a perfectly direct route to my spine due to my positioning. I must say it didn’t hurt at all, the local stung for about 5 seconds and after that I felt nothing at all. After all the worrying I did it really was nothing to worry about and I would tell anyone not to sweat it. Then after about 1 minute I lost the feeling in my whole bottom half, which is the strangest feeling being to move your toes but not feeling like you have a bottom half. So I was laid down and prepared until they were happy that I could feel nothing and my vitals were ok as my blood pressure kept dropping a little on the low side.

Once opened up it must have taken around 5 minutes to get Freya out who came out at 17.37 weighing 6lb 5 oz perfectly happy and healthy and needing no additional help with anything. Followed by Dexter at 17.38 weighing 6lb 13oz again perfectly happy and healthy needing no help. Whilst both were being cleaned up and being photographed by daddy they started to have problems with me, my uterus wouldn’t contract so blood started to pool inside me and me bleeding picked up speed so they spent quite some time trying to stem the bleeding. They injected me with something to get the process going which thankfully seemed to work and it got my uterus shrinking. The whole time they remained calm and talked to me about what they were doing and at no point was I scared of what was happening. Im so grateful to have had such a calm team as it helped both myself and my OH deal with the situation as it was happening. Although im now on Iron tablets for a month as I lost just over 3 pints of blood and the reserve they had put to side for me had been used for a woman who had an emergency section right before me so im a little weak and pale but generally ok.

I 100% know I made the right choice and a C-section does not have to be as traumatic as some peoples stories I have heard. Im not going to lie I am in pain but I can cope with it. No it’s not nice but as long as I keep on top of the painkillers and move slowly ill survive.

xxx
