So we have picked a name for our baby, but my mother has been making little comments ( this was the reason I was not going to tell her ) and now I fear she may have put me off! :( we were going to call him Xavier ( zavier ) I really love the name! What should I do?! I also like Arthur and George but hubby doesn't we already have a Frazer Alexander and a william! :( feel all sad now!

I actually think Frazer & Xavier are too similar sounding for me to ever think of them as siblings. I do however like the name! It's hard when people say things about your names. We haven't told anyone!

Same as above on the similarity but try not to pay attention to comments. Remind yourself how you felt about the name before peoples opinions

Frazer is actually no longer with us, I don't know if that really makes a difference, but I am not shouting Frazer up the stairs if you know what I mean xxxx :(

I like the names together to be honest

Xavier is a great name. I would ignore any negative comments and go with your heart. Or tell them they better get used to it.

Thanks everyone for your input xx we have decided its already his name and I think I was just having a sleep deprived wobble lol! Thanks for the help, you are all right its about what we want x

I like Arthur and George and think the fit great with William because...you know English kings and stuff.
Xavier "feels" very religious and catholic to me, which is great when the family is religious, but could be a bother for the child when they happen to grow up to be not so religious.

I always find comments like this strange as I make no connections between names and religion. Everyone says our lo name (Isaac) is a "nice biblical name" but we are very must atheists and have no connection with religion what so ever so get frustrated with the comments.

OP I think you have to be strong and stand up for your name choice. My MIL wasn't into our choice but we stuck to it and now she likes it, (so she says).

I'm confused. How on earth can a name be religious. How very odd

I really like Xavier. You can't please everyone. As long as your hubby and yourself feel like the name suits your LO, everyone else will love it when they meet him. You guys have the special connection with him right now and know what his name should be.

Well you won't change people, they will connect names with traditional contexts and in this case the name Xavier comes from the surname of a jesuit missionary, people gave his surname as a first name to honour him. hence a lot of people with that name in the past were probably relatively religious and conservative people...that's why i connect it with it.

names like Isaac, as the son of the Abraham and the father of Jacob an Esau is known and a traditional name because of the judeo-christian religion. without this tradition, we would very likely not even know that name. Isaac Newton wouldn't have that name, if he weren't born and grew up in a society very strongly influenced by the judeo-christian tradition.
Same with a name like Jesus. People will connect a person called jesus with the religious figure or the historical person "jesus of nazareth" even if the parents maybe just liked the name and actually are agnostics.
