If you LOVED a name but it was the name of a 'bad person' in a very very popular book/TV series, would it put you off? I didn't know the name before but there is literally no other name that compares to this one for me!

Nope my baby sienna is the name of a crazy women in hollyoaks. I liked the nsme. Nobody has ever said anything about it xx

Tv show no. Real life person. Yes. It's one of the challenges we are having. Not liking people and name association.

Depends really. What's the name? If it's Dexter or Luther I wouldn't worry, if it's Cruella or Voldemort I would...

Yeah I think it would depend on the name, whether it's an established name outside of the show or if it's most commonly known linked to the show.

It's Theon. Any GOT fans out there? Like we aren't naming him after Theon we just LOVE the name!!

Never heard Theon outside GOTs but maybe that character will eventually redeem himself and it wont give anyone negative connotations. Don't want to give spoilers but isn't he currently in the process of doing something positive in the books?

I haven't read the books but I think he is about to do something 'positive' in the tv series, just worried about penis jokes haha

Ha, this is actually the name that came to mind when I first opened the thread.

To be honest I think the fact that he's missing a certain body part would concern me more than the nature of his character (I don't really think of him as a villain, he's had his moments but I think he's becoming pretty dynamic), though I'm really not sure school-aged children would be that familiar with GoT in order to tease him about it.

I seem to recall someone else making a thread about the name Theon so you're not the only one who likes it. :) Personally I think it would be fine because my reaction isn't "oh heck no" like it would have been had you said Joffrey. :haha:

He doesn't have a penis?? That would definitely put me off. It's the kind of thing that's bound to come up when he's a teenager and it might be difficult to live down. If you like the style, how about a Tolkien name as an alternative? Thorin comes to mind?

A TV show that likely won't be talked about by the time your kid is old enough to discuss it wouldn't bother me AT ALL. My middle name is after a TV character, so my mum says, I've never heard of the show, watched it or heard anyone else mention it.

This is a bit different, I think, as A Song of Ice and Fire is one of the top selling fantasy series of all time, which will likely not be forgotten as easily as a TV show and will probably find its way into future generations as a classic (though mature) read. As I mentioned I don't think most kids on the playground would be familiar with it as its content is quite inappropriate for young kids, but the lines blur a bit around high school age perhaps.

I'd use the name of a villain in a TV show/film/book but only if it was a known name outside of it. Like the Dexter vs Voldemort example a pp gave :haha:

Wouldn't put me off at all!! In fact, a lot of my "dream" names are inspired by fictional characters and a couple of celebrities.

It would depend.

Theon is a tragic character, I would liken it to naming my child Tristan or Isolde or similar. The name itself is really nice. I think you'd be dealing with more adults your age hating on the name than kids your child's age.

Having looked up the name in more detail, it's actually a Greek name, meaning 'Godly'
I think I am ok with that :)

Well, teenagers would probably think it was cool then. I would have as a teen.

I think Theon's a lovely name -- I know it's an old French name meaning "untamed" (didn't know about the Greek).

I'm having the same struggle. I love the name Caspar but I'm afraid of friendly ghost references.
