Both OH and I like the name Dexter. Sounds easy, doesn't it?
Would be, were it not for the TV show about the serial killer!
OH thinks that people will associate the name with the tv show, and so we shouldn't use it.

What do you all think about it? Do you consider popular culture when choosing a name? Have you been put off using classics like Edward, Jacob, Isabella because of Twilight?

I am of the feeling that by the time our boy (and his friends) are old enough to make links between their names and grown up telly programmes that Dexter (the show) will have been long since forgotten.
I guess some of their parents would make the connection, but would that really matter?

Oh, I think Dexter would be fantastic anyway! :) I really liked Indiana for a while, but nobody would let me due to Indiana Jones :P

Same thing with Sherlock, now I think about it!

I really like the name Dexter and think it is fine and the show will be over by the time your bean is a little older. I just think the name is really cute!

Thanks. That's what I think too.
The other name I really really REALLY love is Loki. OH is anti that one because in Norse mythology Loki was the god of thievery and mischief, and was a bit nasty to Freya.
Personally, I don't think that really matters either.

I think Dexter is really sweet!

Seth's name is from a character on the OC. I didn't name him after him but was watching it when I was pregnant and I thought 'I really love that name!' lol took a bit of convincing with OH though, but he's nothing other than Seth now :) Nothing else would suit him

Haha, @Freyasmum, I think Loki would be fantastic if only to have Freya and Loki! I have a brother called Lachlan, which often gets shortened to Lochie, and then mistaken for Loki :P

I've not seen that TV show so don't make any connection with Dexter.

We've got Jacob for a boy and haven't even read/watched Twilight and people are asking if we got it from there!

Ha! Loki is my absolute fave, but I'm just not sure I'll be able to convince OH.

My friends have two cats called Freya and Loki! I never knew the story behind it before!

Back to the original question - a name in a tv programme wouldn't put me off. I dont know the programme you're talking about with Dexter but I'm assuming if it's about serial killers its not aimed at kids! So its unlikely that kids in school would associate the name so I would go for it if you like it.

Rosalie is my chosen baby name and even though its bothers me its a twilight name its not actually increased in popularity which is good isabella and bella has though

xx

I love the name Addison...and if I have a girl, I want more than anything to name her Addison. However, everybody associates the name with Addison Montgomery from Greys Anatomy/Private Practice. I don't even watch those shows but I think its something that Im just going to have to get over because I love the names so much. Likewise, I think Dexter is a great name and you should definitely go for it. One thing we should also remember is that neither Dexter nor Addison Montgomery will around our baby's whole lives so while people may associate those characters with them for a while, it wont be forever.

I didn't think of the tv show when I saw the name Dexter. I love Loki! I'd never heard of the story of Freya and Loki though.. I don't think kids would ever tease him about the name Dexter as kids don't watch that show (at least they shouldn't be!) Kids tend to tease names that rhyme easily with something silly!

My sister Jasmine was born right before the Disney Aladdin cartoon came out. By the time she was in school no one ever really made any connection between her name and the cartoon, though my mother was afraid people would.
I don't think it matters that much tbh.

I have always loved Phoebe so that's what I called my little girl - people are always asking if I like Friends which I do but I loved Phoebe way before I watched Friends!! I love the name Renesmee from Breaking Dawn (no. 4 in the Twilight saga) but pronounced ren-es-may!

Lissy, Oscar (14mth) & Phoebe (3mth)

Your last name isn't Morgan is it:wacko:

I love the name Dexter and the tv show but don't think i'd necessarily link them together. Put it on the list!

Claire xx
