 I had the awful news yesterday that my grandad Frank had cancer and because of his age and the side affects of treatment they are just going to make him comfortable and try to ease his pain. He will likely not make it until our baby is born. My dh and I have a rule that I pick girls names and he picks the boys. I'd love to name our baby after my grandad if it's a boy but when I mentioned the name my dh just pulled a face. Is Frank such an awful name? Would it be better as a middle name? I don't dislike it and my grandad played a much bigger part in my life than my dad ever did. Am I just being hormonal? Do you hate the name? Honest opinions please?

I don't think Frank is an awful name! It would be a lovely, meaningful middle name x

If I can be totally honest with you, I think Frank is quite an old-fashioned name. But I love that you want to honor your granddad.

Another thought, I have a friend who's partner is called Frankie. I think that adds a modern-ish twist to it, that you OH may be accepting of. I much prefer Frankie. But it is really a decision for you guys. It is hard when both cant agree, Me and my OH were like it too. :flower:

I love the name Frank, my son is called Franklin and is mostly known as Frankie or Frank. I think its a cute and cool name for a boy  and ive never had any negative responses to his name. Id definately use it. Imagine your grandads face if you told him you were going to name baby after him, bet itd mean so much to him. Sorry to hear about your grandads illness :hugs:. xx

Sorry to hear the bad news about your granda :( :hugs: I think Frank or Frankie is cute, I wanted Hugh/ie after my granda but dh hated it as it would most likely become Shug or Shuggie here. You get to pick the girls name so how about Frankie for a girl, Frances or Francesca??

im sorry to hear about your grandad.
im not keen on Frank but i do think Frankie is nice. Older names are quite popular atm take Archie or Alfie for instance.
im naming my lo Elayna after my great grandmother who was Eleanor so not exactly the same. Maybe find a name that is similar. Francis, Franklin, Franco...

I am sorry to read about your Grandad. I think it would be a beautiful way to honour him, and as MUMOF5 has said, I bet he would be very touched

x

One of my sons is named Sam after one of my grandfathers, whom I never met (he died before I was born). I love the name Frank or esp. Frankie :flower::hugs:

i think its a great idea but if your partner doesn't like it then why not find a name which is the same as frank just a different version of it? here are some suggestions:

Francis
Franklin
Franco
Franz
Frankie

Famous bearers of this name include Frank Lampard (footballer), Frank Bruno (boxer), Frank Sinatra (singer) and Frank Zappa (musician).

my son is called James he was called after my brother, my uncle my grandfather, my greatgrandfather my greatgreat and so on lol.....

all my son's middle names are family names also, i wanted to call him after my grandfather who died when i was four who was called Andrew but maybe in the future if there is another son.... we'll see....

if we have a daughter in the future we're going to call her Elizabeth after my OH's grandmother who is almost 100.... i am hoping she'll meet elizabeth if we were get pregnant, my OH's grandfathers name is Jack (john really) and considered using Jack if we have a boy but not sure as my partners father died 5years ago so really want to name our son if we have one William after him.

we'll see as we're battling infertility atm.

Sorry to hear about your Grandad -- i was very close to my Grandfather as well...

I like versions of Frank for a baby: Francesco, Frankie, Franklin

Or Frank as a middle name...

Nice way to honor your Grandad!

Sorry to hear about your grandad :(

I wanted to name my second son after my grandad by using it as a middle name. Unfortunately, my grandad's name is Donald... I just couldn't do it to a child! I played around with different ideas, even tried mixing it with my dad'sname to make Donian as a middle name, but everyone said it sounded silly.

When Oli was born, he adored my grandad and was like he shadow when he started crawling and walking. My grandad died suddenly last september, so now I really regret not being firmer to get my own way :(

sorry to hear about your grandad.
noticed this threads not been posted on for a while, but thought i'd say, i love the name frank...it's what my baby will be called :)
i think naming baby after your grandad is a lovely thing to do :hugs:

Aww, I'm sorry dear. :hugs: Frank isn't a bad name! In fact, I rather like Franklin and Frankie.

My DH was close with his granddad that passed away last spring while DH was deployed to Iraq. His granddad was in the Navy and someone that DH really looked up to as a role model. We plan on using his name, Lionel, if we ever have a boy. It's not my favorite name but it's definitely growing on me.

If your DH really doesn't like the name maybe compromise and use it as a middle name. I think your granddad would still be just as honored.
