Hi ladies, I was hoping for a vba2c for the majority of my pregnancy. It's complicated to explain the reasons around my decision (family, friends and doctors were all against my choice) and why I was ok with 'taking the risk' in their eyes. Basically I felt unhappy with my previous births and think that especially with my second child I struggled to bond with him.
Anyway as time went on and I turned overdue again (I've been overdue with all 3) I began to feel a bit jittery about not getting a vba2c and ending up with an emcs situation. From the reading I'd done I had decided I wanted to go into labour naturally on or before my due date. But it hadn't happened so rather than wait it out whilst getting increasing worried (which is not a good state of mind for getting into labour) or go through an induction (which the hospital were against anyway), I booked an elective section for term +6 days and did some research around 'natural caesareans' which I thought might help me have a better experience.
I am so glad I did that research now! It was a MUCH better experience all round and the hospital were so supportive of my wishes. Making decisions and feeling in control about my birth experience has helped me deal with some of the issues I have with my past c-sections and I dare say I even enjoyed the experience this time round?!
One of my biggest fears was sitting in theatre and being given the spinal block. I requested my Dh was allowed in with me and stayed with me all the time. The hospital compromised and brought him into theatre asap instead of at the last second like they usually do but until he could come in the lovely midwife who is in charge of looking after the mother held my hand and explained every little detail that was going on. She reminded me to take deep breaths and basically kept me from freaking out! I could tell she had listened carefully to my wishes (we'd been through my birth plan prior) and I could tell she'd also checked everyone else in theatre knew my wishes too. We had the screen lowered at the point that baby was coming out and got to watch our daughter being born and she was put straight on me for skin to skin without being wiped down or anything. The midwife took photos for us and waited till we said she could take her to do the checks. The midwife allowed dh to trim the cord and weigh baby then DH had a turn of cuddling her whilst they finished stitching me. The registrar that did the surgery talked me through what she did and she tried her best to give me one neat scar and cover up the wonky one I had from my second section. In recovery I breastfed baby and she took to it like a dream so all in all a very happy and calm experience. All the theatre staff were chatty and positive which made such a difference (my second section had felt such a somber experience as no one talked or explained anything). I'm really glad that instead of being sad I wasn't able to get my vba2c I was able to turn it into a really positive natural Caesarian experience
Our daughter was born 26th Sept weighing 8lb 13oz
