Introducing our Yellow bump turned pink!
Lexi Selena Ruby Cunningham

Our third little miracle has made her quick entrance on 25th of feb 2014 (2 days after due date) at 06.03am after 1.45h of established labor. She weighed 8lbs 5oz (3875gr) and is 50.5cm long.

After having a relatively easy birth with Mila, I really wanted to have another ‘natural’ birth. By the time I hit 36 weeks I was starting to measure quite small on my personal growth chart (which was based on my other 2 previous pregnancies) Midwife requested I stay monitored and perhaps even need to be induced if percentage kept dropping.

Luckily we had a couple of growth scans and baby seemed happy and healthy enough. I must admit I was not to worried considering Mila was a very healthy 9.1lbs and a little smaller did not seem like such a bad thing.

About 1 week before due date I started to feel some pains, mainly period type pains. They would come in waves but I could not distinguish braxton hicks with them like i had with my other two. Also, I still did not see bits of my plug (which gradually started coming away a couple of weeks before due with them).

Only 2 days before due date (23rd of Feb) did I start to notice a lot of eggwhite cm and discharge. This gradually got more and more until on my due date it started to streak with a bit of blood.

After this I started getting irregular braxton hicks with period pain every evening. They would start up at around 11pm and continue through the night ranging from 7 to 15 min apart but never regulating or getting closer to my frustration.

With Mila I instantly new when labor had begun and whilst the pain seemed similar, it took another 2 ‘nights’ of false labor before we got some action. Luckily the midwife had warned me that it is not unusual for third pregnancies to have some false starts so I really did try and ignore it after a couple hours of timing, took some panadol and want back to sleep.

1 day over due I started to have the suspicion I was leaking fluid as well as plug. I texted the midwife however since I was unsure I left it and that night I had another night of wondering if labor would set off.

Mother in Law was about to head off to a holiday batch (and she would normally have helped us with the kids) and I also planned to have a birth photographer present which meant I needed to give a bit of heads up.. All in all I think this did trigger me being a bit to stressed to properly go into labor that night. The next morning, MIL offered to take the kids with her to the batch, which hubby and I agreed too (giving us a nice week to have baby and settle in).

That evening, I started to feel more fluid when I couched and distinguished a bit of a gush. With the kids gone and the house finally peaceful I was pretty confident I would be in labor soon so I too some panadol and headed to bed, knowing id wake up in labor soon.

I did wake up but not how I expected. I heard a pop and it took me a little time to come to the conclusion it was indeed my water. Luckily toilet was just across form us so I made it there without to much leaking and I started to get excited. With my first, my waters where broken to induce labor, which worked but gave me horrid contractions. With my second they only broke at the pushing stage. I knew this would rapidly start things up so I rang the midwife who was already at the hospital and explained the situation. Contractions where still only around the 7min apart for a minute however I had a feeling they would come thick and fast soon after.

So we packed the stuff on the car and I rang the photographer to meet us at hospital. We arrived shortly after 4. Midwife did a check and then proceeded to tell me I was about 2/3cm dilated.. Well I was slightly gutted. I was already in quite a bit of pain and was starting to doubt my natural birthpool plan.

At 4.30 the photographer arrived and I asked the midwife to get the pool filled as my water had then totally gone a minute before when bouncing on the ball.

I was monitored during the time it took to fill the pool (20 min or so) in which I had to lean on the table and bed to get through them. This baby might be coming quicker then I thought..

Luckily the pool filled up in time for me to still be able to walk (just) and we headed over. I can not describe the bliss of getting in there.. It was absolute heaven for the first 10 min or so. I could feel my whole body just completely relax and give in.

However, after those 10 or so minutes the next contractions had ramped up another notch and I could start to feel transition hit and the slight feeling I was not going to cope with this anymore. I had to strictly remind myself that I could and that I had no choice and instead of panicking to try and push with the pain to see if that would relieve them.

It did a little and I warned hubby to get the midwife as I was feeling pushy now. Midwife came in and examined me 9cm with just a lip left. I was on my back in the pool at this stage and really wanted to turn but was told I had to turn back around to be checked. Eventually I did move over as my arms where starting to tingle from the effort and thats when things got serious, there was no stopping the pushy feeling and the pain of Lexi starting to crown. Midwife and hubby urged my to turn around and hubby had to grab and drag me over as I was unable to move.

I got coached through the crowning and can remember her telling me to feel the head and guide her out. Whilst I did feel the head, I did not have the strength to pick her up as I got her body out and midwife handed her to me. I was stunned and amazed, I had done it! I had my water birth, and I was right! It was a little girl!!!

Once I had slightly recovered from the shock, hubby cut her cord (placenta had stopped pulsating and started to come loose). And I handed her over to him so I could get out to birth the placenta.

I got wheeled back to the suite and about 10 min later the placenta was out. I got handed my precious cargo whilst the midwife examined me and only found a 1st degree perinieal tear she needed to stitch up for me. Whilst I got stitched up and pushed an prodded (midwife was slightly concerned I was still bleeding) I managed to put Lexi on the boob.

Total time of labor is recorded as 1h 45m, no pain relief other then the pool. Im so glad it was recoded my the photographer and we got discharged from the hospital 4.5 hours after having her.
